Memo: Gulati in Los Angeles

Sunil Gulati is currently in Los Angeles for the Gold Cup. His attendance was easily visible at the Home Depot Center as the Women’s Gold Cup semifinal double-header had 900 fans for the first match and less than 2,000 fans for the US verses Mexico semi-final match.

My theory on Gulati’s presence in Southern California was more for a final meeting with Jurgen Klinsmann than women’s soccer. This meeting would put the finishing touches on the new coach’s deal. The La Opinion rumor on Jose Peckerman was closer to something we’d read in the Onion.

I’m looking forward to the Klinsmann announcement in the coming days.

Memo: Abby Wambach unmatched

Every so often an athlete comes around and just dominates on mere physical attributes. Reggie Bush’s speed in college football, Lebron James in high school basketball, and McQwire and Bonds home runs come to mind. Abby Wambach is one of these athletes.

At 5 feet 11inches and at least 150 pounds her physique is unmatched in women’s soccer. Last night in the Gold Cup Semifinal Wambach dominated her markers with mere size and strength. Both goals she shielded her marker and put away Jan Koller type finishes. There was little for her Mexican defender to do.

I’m a soccer fan at heart and I’ll give most games a chance. Styles of play, certain rivalries and player match ups are on the top of my list for entertainment. I also enjoy the individuals. Christiano Ronaldo flare on the ball, Thierry Henry’s burst and shield style of running by defenders and so many other individuals that make our game excited.

Women’s soccer is not at the top of my list of games to watch. However, Wambach’s size complemented by her pace and skill gives her an advantage that so few athletes possess and she is worth the price of admission.

Megged Magazine Exclusive - Arena linked to Iraq

Sources have told Megged Magazine that Bruce Arena met with Saddam Hussein to coach the Iraqi National Team. This has been a rumor for quite a while and speculation has resurfaced when a photo was discovered.

See Photo: http://www.goal.com/images/3140_news.jpg

Unnamed informants in Iraq have said this photo was uncovered in a raid on a Bagdad Palace with it’s own soccer field where the meeting could have taken place before the Persian Gulf War II.

Insiders speculate on what would of happened if the war never took place. Could Arena have signed with the Iraqi’s freeing up the US MNT to sign Guus Hiddink prior to him signing with the Russian’s?

MLS implements Designated Player Rule and other competition initiatives

Major League Soccer Communications

FRISCO, Texas -- Major League Soccer's Board of Governors today unveiled details of the 2007 MLS competition structure, including the implementation of a Designated Player Rule.
The Designated Player Rule will allow MLS to sign players whose salary will fall outside of the team salary budget and whose cost above the salary budget charge will be the financial responsibility of the club. A Designated Player's salary charge will be capped at $400,000, but his salary could be higher. The League office will continue to sign Designated Players under Major League Soccer's single entity system, but individual clubs will determine to whom they wish to assign Designated Player status.

The salaries of players above the maximum salary budget have been the financial responsibility of the collective group of MLS investors. Players such as Landon Donovan (Los Angeles), Carlos Ruiz (FC Dallas) and Eddie Johnson (Kansas City) will be "grandfathered" for one year after which they, too, will assume Designated Player status.

Each team will initially receive one Designated Player slot, and clubs are allowed to trade Designated Player slots. However, no team can have more than two Designated Players.

The Designated Player Rule is a three-year initiative that will conclude after the 2009 MLS season when its future will be reviewed.

"The designated player rule provides clubs an exciting mechanism to add tremendous value to their rosters," said MLS Commissioner Don Garber. "Our fans have stated they would like to see more world-class stars in MLS, and the Designated Player Rule allows us to sign more elite talent from throughout the world."

In addition to the Designated Player Rule, certain other initiatives focused on competition quality were also adopted. These initiatives include:

• An increase in the club's share of transfer revenue generated from the transfer of a player on the club's roster with a commitment to reinvest all of such revenue into a replacement player or players.

• A commitment to invest further in scouting and information systems at the League level that will include a worldwide scouting network.

• An increase in the expansion allocation budget for Toronto FC.

Together with the youth development initiatives announced yesterday, these changes represent a wide-ranging and significant emphasis on investing in Major League Soccer's on-field product.

The MLS Board of Governors also announced the following:

• The 2007 MLS season will feature a 30-game regular season. Each week, one of the 13 MLS clubs will have a "bye."

• The Eastern & Western Conference alignment will be maintained with Toronto FC joining the Eastern Conference. The 2007 conference alignment:

Eastern Conference
Chicago Fire
Columbus Crew
D.C. United
Kansas City Wizards
New England Revolution
Red Bull New York
Toronto FC

Western Conference
Chivas USA
Colorado Rapids
FC Dallas
Houston Dynamo
Los Angeles Galaxy
Real Salt Lake

• Each club will play each other team twice (home and away) for 24 games per team.
- The remaining six games are played between teams from the same conference. (3 home and 3 away)
- For the Western Conference, one extra intra-conference game is played, with preference given to rivalries.
- For example, the Los Angeles Galaxy and Chivas USA will play each other four times, as will Real Salt Lake/Colorado Rapids and FC Dallas/Houston Dynamo.

• The MLS Cup Playoffs will continue under the same format used in 2006 pertaining to number of games. Each Conference Semifinal Series will consist of two games. The Eastern and Western Conference Championships will consist of one game and MLS Cup will be a one-game final.
• Eight teams will qualify for the playoffs.
• The top two teams in each conference, plus four "wild cards" with the most points after 30 games, regardless of conference, will qualify.

• The 12th MLS regular season concludes on Sunday, October 21, with the 2007 MLS Cup Playoffs commencing on the weekend of November 10-11.

• MLS Cup 2007 will take place Sunday, November 18 (site TBA at a later date).

• The 2007 Sierra Mist MLS All-Star Game will take place July 18 or 19 (site TBA at a later date).

In addition, the MLS Board of Governors approved an initiative that will ensure 100 percent of MLS matches will be broadcast live on television for the 2007 season, the first time in the League's history where all games will be televised.

The 2007 Master MLS Schedule is slated to be announced early next year, while dates and venues for teams' 2007 MLS Spring Training plans will be released in the near future. Major League Soccer's 2007 SuperDraft takes place on Friday, January 12, 2007, in conjunction with the NSCAA convention in Indianapolis, IN.

Major League Soccer's championship match, MLS Cup 2006, features the Eastern Conference Champions New England Revolution playing the Western Conference Champions Houston Dynamo for the Alan I. Rothenberg Trophy on Sunday, November 12, 2006. The game will be televised live to a national audience on ABC Sports (3:30 p.m. ET) while ESPN International will televise it in 96 countries via ESPN Dos, ESPN Atlantic and ESPN Pac-Rim networks.

MLS launches Youth Development Initiative

Major League Soccer Communications

NEW YORK -- Today Major League Soccer charts new territory among major professional sports leagues in the United States by launching a youth development initiative that allows teams to acquire, outside of the annual draft, top young players from their respective local areas. Ultimately, this initiative will enhance the quality of young players entering the League and allow more of them to represent their hometown teams.
MLS is requiring each of its teams next season to establish a youth amateur program, separate from the pro club. These youth teams will give talented young players with professional aspirations an excellent opportunity to pursue their dreams, stay close to home, and continue their education. Players registered for at least 24 months in an MLS youth program become eligible to sign a professional contract with that team without entering the MLS SuperDraft.

"The launch of youth development teams for MLS clubs is a major step forward for professional player development in the United States," said MLS Deputy Commissioner Ivan Gazidis. "MLS clubs will be able to invest resources in scouting and developing talented young players who will ultimately have the opportunity to graduate directly onto the first team roster. Those clubs which develop the best programs will reap the rewards on their senior roster. This new focus on youth development at the local level will provide tremendous additional opportunities for the best young American players and will better connect our clubs to their communities."

During the next few years, MLS clubs will create teams in up to six age groups. Players on these teams will wear the club's colors and train under the team's coaching staff. Players on MLS youth teams may be able to compete with other youth club teams at various times during the year. MLS youth programs will not jeopardize a player's NCAA eligibility.

Teams with existing youth programs that meet the established criteria may begin registering players to their Home Grown Player List this season. Therefore, the first "graduates" of these programs could move directly onto MLS rosters as early as 2008. Through 2010, teams will be permitted to sign up to two players from its Home Grown Player List per year.

The MLS youth programs will meet a number of standards, including:

The program will be based in the team's "Home Territory" approved by the MLS Board of Governors.

Each team will be allowed one team of up to 18 players in each of the following age groups on its Home Grown Player List:

Under-25
U20
U18
U16
U15
U14

Clubs will hire at least one coach for each age group. Players on these teams will be registered on the team's Home-Grown Player List. A minimum number of training and game days per year has been set for each age group.

All players must reside in a team's "Home Territory" for at least one year prior to being added to the team's Home Grown Player List. Players must be added to an MLS team's Home Grown Player List prior to entering a four-year college, but can maintain their Home Grown Player status during college if registered before entering that institution. Similarly, members of the U17, U20, and U23 U.S. National Teams cannot be added to an MLS team's Home Grown Player List, but a player already on a Home Grown Player List can maintain that status if selected for a U.S. National team at a later date.

Major League Soccer has already established player development programs unique among U.S. professional team sports with its Reserve Division, which recently completed its second season, and Generation adidas, which provides scholarships for select players. This new initiative complements those existing programs and reemphasizes Major League Soccer's ongoing commitment to player development and lasting connections to its teams' communities.

MEGGED EXCLUSIVE: NY Soccer, Trick or Treat

Sources in NY City confirm to Megged that United States Soccer Federation President Sunil Gulati hosted a Halloween Party for the NY Red Bulls coaching staff and Jurgen Klinsmann.

Residents, of Gulati’s Brooklyn burro, claim Gulati went as Superfan, Arena wore a DC United polo from the 90’s complemented by John Harkes, Jeff Agoos, and Ritchie Cunningham wearing United uniforms from those glory days. Klinsmann went as a German version of Jeff Spicoli, “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” and was only allowed to speak Spanish (per Gulati's request). John Harkes still laughs when anyone says “trick or treat, chicklets por favor.”

Eric Wynalda is thinking about a making a fat joke with Arena stealing all the candy but has decided to go with his better judgment.

MEGGED EXCLUSIVE: Landon Donovan set to announce retirement....

Confirmed Megged sources have told us that Landon Donovan is set to announce his retirement from Major League Socccer and the Los Angeles Galaxy. After a frustrating year with the Galaxy and the Men’s National Team Donovan has called it quits from 11 a-side soccer.

Sources close to the Beach Soccer League (‘the BSL’) boast of a 5 year deal with the soccer star. A press conference will likely be held on the Manhattan Beach Pier or city’s ‘strand.’ Details will follow.

This decision is a world away from the European football clubs that have called Donovan’s name since he was sixteen. However ‘Cakes’, as he is known in the town’s surfing community, is looking forward to his next soccer challenge.

Donovan, a resident of Manhattan Beach, was overheard at Ercoles Bar, the local beachcomber’s hangout, as saying ‘Life’s a Beach.’

Calls and instant messages into the U.S. Men’s National Team coach were not immediately returned.

Beckham, Ronaldo Real Madrid Feud...

Megged sources close to the story confirm a serious row on the Real Madrid bench. Both David Beckham and Ronaldo are experiencing friction in the Bernabeu locker-room due to the Major League Soccer contracts offered to both players.

An unnamed Real player has stated that neither player will sit next to each other on the bench. “It’s a difficult situation as both those guys spend so much time there.”

The feud stems from where the former world class players will end up in America. Neither player will comment on the New York Red Bull vs. Los Angeles Galaxy disagreement. However, both players confirmed to Megged that neither want to play for the Columbus Crew.

Wynalda, Houston and Yellow Cards

MEMO: Wynalda tops Arena

Rather than shoving each other as Arsene Wenger and Alan Pardew did during Sunday’s Arsenal-West Ham EPL match both Bruce Arena and Eric Wynalda were professional, civil and were able to make light of their recent feud.

However, Arena's selection of Eddie Johnson over Taylor Twellman was once again proven to be a poor decision. Wynaldo’s criticism of this was proven spot on. Twellman’s finishing is leading a ‘beat-up’ Rev’s team into the MLS Finals. Well down Wynalda and Twellman.

I wonder if the Nike-Joga-USSF hype had anything to do with Johnson’s selection over Twellman.

MEMO: Love the Colors, Hate the Lines

The Western Conference’s match had every aspect of the “Beautiful Game.” Brilliant team colors on the field and in the stands. The Dutch like orange and Inter Milan like black and blue were great. Plenty of goals from an attacking Houston and blunt smash-mouth individual play from Colorado made for a memorable match.

But the pitch presentation was a mess. White, yellow, and red lines were all over the place. Logo's of college football and college conferences were major distractions. The NCAA has made a mess of player development in soccer, do they have to ruin the MLS semifinals. Professional soccer is in a fight for survival to keep top talent in this league. A big game like this doesn’t need to American football logos and lines taking away from the experience. The MLS fans and players deserve better.

MEMO: Referee Brian Hall

Did you forget your Yellow Cards? You robbed Brian Ching of a blatant PK in the first half that would have certainly ended Colorado’s hopes to come back. Pablo Mastroeni’s professional foul on Clark and others should have been automatic yellows. Cards are part of the game and they preserve attractive attacking soccer please remember them next time.

Big Ego's set to clash in ESPN broadcast booth!

MEMO: US Soccer fans and MLS Fans

Bruce Arena and Eric Wynalda will be in the broadcast booth providing commentary for the New England Revolution vs. DC United playoff match this Sunday at 4 PM EST on ESPN 2. Anyone that watched the USMNT World Cup matches will remember the 'choice criticism' Wynalda gave his former coach.

I hope Wynalda brings security!
