Memo: Abby Wambach unmatched

Every so often an athlete comes around and just dominates on mere physical attributes. Reggie Bush’s speed in college football, Lebron James in high school basketball, and McQwire and Bonds home runs come to mind. Abby Wambach is one of these athletes.

At 5 feet 11inches and at least 150 pounds her physique is unmatched in women’s soccer. Last night in the Gold Cup Semifinal Wambach dominated her markers with mere size and strength. Both goals she shielded her marker and put away Jan Koller type finishes. There was little for her Mexican defender to do.

I’m a soccer fan at heart and I’ll give most games a chance. Styles of play, certain rivalries and player match ups are on the top of my list for entertainment. I also enjoy the individuals. Christiano Ronaldo flare on the ball, Thierry Henry’s burst and shield style of running by defenders and so many other individuals that make our game excited.

Women’s soccer is not at the top of my list of games to watch. However, Wambach’s size complemented by her pace and skill gives her an advantage that so few athletes possess and she is worth the price of admission.

She would have to be the world's best Co-Ed Ringer!
