South Bay Peninsula Soccer League

The South Bay Peninsula Soccer League (SBPSL) is one of the largest adult men's soccer leagues in Southern California. For over 30 years the SBPSL has organized a non-profit league for competitive amateur and recreational soccer players who reside in the South Bay and Palos Verdes Peninsula.

The league was founded in 1972 to teach soccer fundamentals to non-soccer playing parents who coached their children’s youth teams. The increasing popularity of soccer is reflected by the growth of our league. Today we have 40 teams and over 800 players participating each week. Teams from our league also compete in various regional, national, and international tournaments.

The objective of the league is to promote the growth and development of the game of soccer throughout Southern California by enabling competitions; to promote goodwill, healthy competition and teach soccer fundamentals to parents who coached their kids and youth teams. The league is committed to the enjoyment of the game of soccer at competitive and recreational levels.

The league has five divisions. The most competitive division is the ‘Premiere’ division, and has no age restriction. ‘Open’ is a slightly less competitive division and has no age restriction. Beginning in 2006, the league implemented a promotion/relegation system between the ‘Premiere’ and ‘Open’ divisions. The following three divisions are age restricted. Division 30 is for those born in 1976 or earlier. Division 40 is for those born in 1966 or earlier. Division 50 is for those born in 1956 or earlier.

Membership & Affiliates: The SBPSL has over 800 amateur male players between the ages of 18-80. Three referee associations support the league with approximately 400 officials. There are also approximately 100 league administrators, coaches and support personnel.

FC Spare Tire

Objectivo.com would like to highlight FC Spare Tire, Seatle, WA, as it's January featured club.

FC Spare Tire is an amateur men’s league soccer team with non-amateur aspirations. What the team lacks in skill is made up tenfold in heart.

FC Spare Tire, or “Tire” as its known, came into being in the spring of 2002. The club was born with a roster of players who had a collective 0 years of varsity-level soccer experience. The team even took its name from the informal definition of excess fat around one’s waistline—which many players had.

The team had many a dismal season within the Greater Seattle Soccer League in those early years, but somehow found the determined spirit to carry on. Attrition removed those unworthy of the division 4 challenge while curiosity from skilled players brought about new additions and dimension to the team. Once known as a veritable cupcake, before long Tire garnered a reputation as a formidable offensive club with a stonewall defense to boot.

Annual playoff trip runs and two championships later, FC Spare Tire, now in its fifth year is one of the most feared teams in its division. The team has produced scoring leaders and shutout masters, and title hopes are within grasp with each and every season’s beginning.

The team is led by captains Tim Farley and Steve Lassiter (forwards) and among outstanding stars, it boasts offensive juggernauts with names such as Mike Gill-More, Doug Hodson, Kelly Antoncich, Erik Cannella, Bryan Monaghan and Dave Kalinski. Its defense is held strong by the likes of Don Gill-More, Mike McMasters, Jim Stern, Jacob Pickett, Shawn Menning, Bracey Rogers and Phil Burger. One can’t disregard the outstanding goalkeeping abilities of Shelby Dobbs, a three-time shutout leading champion.

We invite one and all to visit the team’s website, which receives nearly 500 page hits daily, located at www.fcsparetire.com. It is proudly sponsored by Seattle’s Beall Black & Pickett Real Estate Group and Bellevue’s Eastside Orthopedics & Sports Medicine.

Q. Who will make a greater impact 'on the field' for his new MLS team?

David Beckham, LA Galaxy 63.64%
Claudio Reyna, NY Red Bulls 36.36%

Monday MEMO: U.S. defeats Denmark

Team Objectivo attended the U.S. vs. Demark game on Saturday at the Home Depot Center. This was a different type of national team game as there were so many new faces and a new coaching staff after 8 years of Bruce Arena.

Captain Change:
Obviously Claudia Reyna, Captain USA, didn’t play. But, Landon Donovan did and to most US fans he wasn’t the captain. Jimmy Conrad, center back from Kansas City Wizards, was Bradley choice. There was something missing in this decision as there wasn’t much publicity about this decision. I don’t care who the captain is but let’s bring more attention to it and make it more meaningful.

Landon Donovan:
LD played a wide right midfield position with tons of room to run at players and serve balls into the box. However, Landon made diagonal runs into a congested attacking third and served very few balls to Nate Jaqua and Kenny Cooper. Justin Mapp successfully ran at defenders from his wide position and created the days best scoring opportunity and play of the day (Bornstein goal). This is yet another day Donovan failed to impress and live up to his potential.

Glass Half Empty:
Home Depot Center was empty. Where were the fans? I stated before US Soccer failed to market this game by incorrectly marketed Brain Ching who was not selected to Bradley’s camp. Official numbers were 10,040 seats sold. Very disappointing and more proof of Gulati’s disconnect with U.S. Soccer fans. If Klinnsman were the manager would the game been Sold Out?

Bradley & Nowak:
No question these guys are the faces of USSF coaching staff. But I’m still not convinced that either guy is the right motivator and is connecting with players. I support these guys as the Technical Director staff, but a big name European coach still seems to be the ideal game plan.

New Faces:
Justin Mapp, Chris Rolfe, Kenny Cooper, and Ricardo Clarke were all impressive. These guys have bright young careers and I look forward to watching them this MLS season.

Match Ups:
Chris Albright battled Simon Poulsen the entire afternoon. These were mostly likely the two most athletic players on the field and exchanged some of the most physical tackles and aerial challenges of the day.

Matt Reis:
Failed to impress as a potential international keeper. Passing ability and distribution was poor and he was beat on the early goal by Denmark in which he failed to come off his line.

MEMO: Shameless Self Promoting

MEMO TO: MLS GM's

The shameless self-promoting of ‘Open Tryouts’ for MLS clubs has become hysterical. Recently the LA Galaxy sign David Beckam for $52 million a year and then plan to have open tryouts a few weeks later. Toronto FC had an open tryout earlier in the year. This is insulting to fans, players and the league to promote this opportunity but offer no guarantee to a player. These clubs charge money, mail press releases and invite the media.

Don't get me wrong I love the Vince Papale film "Invincible" and the story. But, this is a true story of a coach who is attempting to motivate an under performing team and reach out to a working class community. I believe this marketing and motivating tactic could still be duplicated in the professional sports. But, these MLS teams haven't and don’t offer a guaranteed roster spot.

I want to draw attention to the Richmond Kickers. This club does guarantee a roster spot for their 'open tryout' for nine straight years. Click here for more information.

Richmond Kickers plays in the USL and more club information can be found at www.richmondkickers.com.
