MEMO: Shameless Self Promoting
Posted January 19, 2007 Posted Under:MEMO TO: MLS GM's
The shameless self-promoting of ‘Open Tryouts’ for MLS clubs has become hysterical. Recently the LA Galaxy sign David Beckam for $52 million a year and then plan to have open tryouts a few weeks later. Toronto FC had an open tryout earlier in the year. This is insulting to fans, players and the league to promote this opportunity but offer no guarantee to a player. These clubs charge money, mail press releases and invite the media.
Don't get me wrong I love the Vince Papale film "Invincible" and the story. But, this is a true story of a coach who is attempting to motivate an under performing team and reach out to a working class community. I believe this marketing and motivating tactic could still be duplicated in the professional sports. But, these MLS teams haven't and don’t offer a guaranteed roster spot.
I want to draw attention to the Richmond Kickers. This club does guarantee a roster spot for their 'open tryout' for nine straight years. Click here for more information.
Richmond Kickers plays in the USL and more club information can be found at www.richmondkickers.com.

I'm love to see someone from a local team get a shot. But I think it would be cooler if LA had a reserve team that competing in a local Semi Pro league.
