Will soccer (the MLS) ever be a major American sport?

I've had the same argument with people all over about the validity of the MLS. Granted the MLS is not that great of a product right now. However, my argument is that over time, the MLS can be as successful as baseball or football. Here are a few reasons why:
-Soccer is growing at rapid rates in this country
-Young kids now have players to look up to that are from the same cities as they are
-As a culture, I feel America is starting to adapt some European qualities; we are starting to take an interest to what others like and what else is out there for us= soccer
-There is so much growth potential, way more than in Europe, due to the size of our country, therefore attracting big businesses looking for the next big hit
-As our talent pool starts to grow over the years (15-25 years) there will not be enough room in each of the Euro leagues to house the influx of Americans, along with their own influx, where do they go?
-on that same note, the more players we start producing for overseas, the less work permits will be offered to try to keep the money in the EU

These are just some issues that beg the question. I'd love to hear what your opinions are on the matter.

Memo: Landon vs Rooney

I want to preface this Memo with the fact that I support Landon Donovan in most ‘American Soccer Debates’ and feel he’s the best American player in general. So this may surprise most of you I debate.

Landon Donovan isn’t ‘half the man’ Wayne Rooney is. Rooney is a fans player, a coaches player and a teammates player. He’s the hardest worker on the pitch and sweats more than any Englishman I’ve ever seen. I mention Rooney because we’ve just seen England’s ‘Golden Boy’ tear the EPL a new one and now we watch our ‘Golden Boy’ sit at the bottom of MLS.

I bring this up because I live in Los Angeles and watch most Galaxy games. I have season tickets and run Objectivo here in LA. But the Galaxy are terrible. They suck. And this is Donovan’s team. Hence, my MEMO calling out Donovan and Galaxy as a bunch of underachievers.

Does Donovan have value outside of Los Angeles? If so, it maybe high time to shop his ass around. Maybe Ohio or Kansas? Parting with Donovan opens up a strike mate with David Beckham and I’m not sure Donovan deserves that chance. Plus does anyone really consider him 'Designated Player' worthy?

Benitez outcoached?

Was Rafa outcoached by Ancelotti in today's game or did he bring it on himself? I think Milan were the better team going into the game, and it showed. However, Rafa's subs, and formation were ill-advised. Gerrard was playing with his back to the goal most of the game which is not his strong suit. He should have been dropped into the midfield ealry in the second half where he can create chances, and get everyone involved. Secondly, Crouch should have been in way before the 75th minute. He's great in the air, he's great with his feet, and he draws a lot of attention due to his size. Defenders have to be worried where he is on every cross and every ball into the box. With the little time he had, he caused a lot. And one person who I was totally unimpressed with was Harry Kewell. What a disappointment. If I could say one thing to Kewell, you can't dive like that when you come on as a sub. You're not going to get the calls. And you shouldn't be diving in the first place, you're a sub, your legs are fresh. Run through it!

Get Into The Game!

Memo to Fox Soccer & MLS:

Most days it’s not easy being a soccer fan. My wife, who has never missed a USC Football Game, gives me a look as if something is hanging from my nose when I watch endless soccer on the weekend. However, like you I have learned to cope with being obsessed an un-popular game.

So when MLS and Fox Soccer team up to showcase soccer I get some time in the sunshine. But then I see and hear the commercial to showcase the matches they air.

Wow did they miss an open netter! Those commercials suck! The band, The Rising Sound, is embarrassing. The music, Get In The Game, is unbearable. The only thing worse is televising an MLS game in Giants Stadium with 5,000 fans in attendance.

I have to believe Sunil Gulati had a say in choosing the band.

Champions League Final '07-AC Milan vs Liverpool-TOMORROW!!

Hey everyone, this is Sean from Objectivo.com. I had to remind everyone about tomorrow's Champion's League Final due to its magnitude. It's a rematch of two years ago b/n AC Milan and Liverpool FC. Tons of trash talking has already been exchanged among the two teams, and even the coaches. AC Milan want revenge for giving up a three goal lead, to eventually lose in PKs. The game is on ESPN2 at 2:30 EST. Check in with us after the game for the post-match headlines. Take care!

The Academy of Football?

Memo to West Ham: You can't call yourself "The Academy of Football" (See Photo) and buy two South Americans. I also think West Ham will end up in the Championship next season.

Latest Poll results

The latest poll on objectivo.com questioned who would win in tomorrow's FA Cup Final. A staggering 79% said that Man Utd would take the cup, to 21% who thought the Blues would get it done. After seeing many matches between these two teams, I am quite surprised to see that only 77 people voted for Chelsea, and 290 voted for Man Utd. It was closer to 40-60 here at the Objectivo office poll, however, still in favor of Man Utd. I guess Objectivo has a lot of Red-Devils' supporters. Make sure to watch tomorrow's game, and then we will see who was right, and who was wrong. Have a great weekend!

UEFA Cup 05/16-- What a dramatic game, huh?

If you saw the game the other day, you'll agree with me that there was much action throughout the pitch, especially in front of both goals. While Sevilla looked to have the better of the play, Espanyol fought equally as hard, especially after losing a man to his second yellow. Although Espanyol managed to extend the game into extra-time with ten men, they could not hold off a well polished Sevilla offense when Kanoute scored to put Sevilla up 2-1 in OT. And as we all thought Sevilla would certainly take the Cup, Espanyol scored their second deflected goal of the match minutes before the end of the 2nd OT, to send the game into a penalty shootout. But their luck would end there. Sevilla took their second UEFA Cup back to back in the anticlimactic PK's. So much excitement, can't wait for next weeks Champions League.

Another dose of reality for us USMNT fans

Another dose of reality for us USMNT fans. There shouldn't be any surprise with the Coach Bradley announcement. I want to remind all of you who took my bet we'd go 0-1-2 this past World Cup and that our players don’t stack up with the top 16 other countries that moved on from the Group Stage.

Many of us dreamed of Jurgen Klinsmann. But after Coach Arena reminded us fans that USSF are penny pinching ODP driven micro-managers that there was no way we’d close the deal with Coach Klinsmann who happens to live 30 minutes from our National Training Center in Home Depot Center.

Some of you actually thought we had a shot with Arsene Wenger. Dream on. Wenger won’t coach English players, you think he’d coach Americans (Please remove your head from your ass).

Here’s the short and skinny. Our players need to stay at home to get better. Gooch and Beaz are perfect examples of why. These guys don’t have clubs that want them. I would imagine Convey, Dempsey, Wolf and hand full of others will be loaned, traded and riding pine real soon. They are American citizens without support systems and companies that care about them.

The USMNT coaching gig isn’t the best gig in the states anymore. I argue that working for the Red Bulls or AEG’s Galaxy are the best two jobs in the US soccer. Coach Yallop and Coach Arena will most likely build dynasty’s with or with out the MLS and make a nice financial profit. In closing I’d prefer more USMNT fans to ask players to return to MLS and support the players that play here.

Wanted: MLS Club to make history

Tottenham is a team with great history, which is renowned for playing an attractive style of football. Was carrying on these traditions important to you?
Of course, because in the Netherlands there is only one way to play and that is attractively. You have to entertain the people and that is a principle. Results are important as well, so you have to mix both things., Martin Jol of Tottenham Hotspur's

Most of us know when a manager and a club care about "attacking-attractive" football. Several clubs come to mind; Arsenal, Barcelona, and Ajax.

A ‘culture of play’ like Germany’s in the World Cup. I make reference to Dutch Manager of Tottenham Martin Jol's interview with FIFA stating his and the club’s passion to balance a organization style of play.

MLS is starving for both a manager and a club with that mind frame. Prior to the World Cup, USMNT Coach Bruce Arena was asked what professional league he most admired and watched. Serie A was his answer. Arena's style of play is best described as defensive and counter atack-ish and would never be confused with attractive.

I wish a MLS Club would say this, "Our goal is not to win the MLS this year or next year. But our goal is to win fans because of our attacking-attractive style of play." Teams could also look at Ajax, Arsenal, & Barcelona for motivation.

Austin Lightning Soccer - PDL Team

Austin Lightning Soccer - A Premier Development League Team of the United Soccer League - announces that home games are moved this season to the 15,000 seat Toney Burger Center Stadium in Austin. The first home game, with the New Orleans Shell Shockers, will be the first of four US Open Cup qualifying games for The Lightning this season. The first game of the season is May 4th in El Paso.

Coached by Jaime Mimbela, The Lightning is poised for an exciting season in the new stadium after tryouts in which 100 players from surrounding states participated. "We have good reason to believe this will be one of the best seasons in The Lightning's history," commented Mimbela.

The Austin area has a growing soccer fan base with more than 35,000 persons registered in youth soccer and hundreds of adult teams. The move to a larger stadium will accomodate expected growth in attendance for Lightning games and the growing enthusiasm for soccer
in Austin.
