SuperLiga Poll Results

We had a great turn out for this SuperLiga poll. We asked everyone if they thought an MLS side would win the inaugural SuperLiga, or if a Mexican Primera Division team would win the trophy. So far, who ever organized this tournament loves the fact that there are good, hard-fought games being played, even a few red cards to increase the rivalry for future SuperLiga tournaments. Fans of both sides are seeing victories and defeats, which is only good for everyone involved.

As for our poll, it seems we possibly have more MLS fans voting, or MPD fans that feel there teams are still not game-fit. I’m not sure which one it is, and I’m certainly not taking anything away from the MLS teams involved. Of the 377 people who voted, 91% said that the one of the four MLS sides would win the new tournament. 9% of you voted for a MPD side to win. Stay tuned to Objectivo for the latest on the SuperLiga as it is only the quarterfinals.

Results for recent Tevez Poll

In our last poll, we asked if you thought Carlos Tevez would end up with Man Utd., West Ham, or a third undisclosed team. Of the 224 people that voted, 58% said that he would end up playing for Manchester United this season. 24% went with the second option, and figured he would wind up back at West Ham. Finally, 18% said that he would be suiting up for an undisclosed third team. There's a lot of drama surrounding this young kid. But I don't feel bad for him because no matter where he plays this season, he's going to be rich.

Poll Result: Beckham vs. Chelsea

With all the hype behind David Beckham this past week, (and especially the attention on his indecision whether or not to play against Chelsea) the recent poll was fitting for the gamut of reactions from every writer around the world. So we decided to do a poll about what your thoughts on him playing or not playing really were. Of the 349 people that voted, 8% took the first option and were completely angry at the prospect of him not playing against Chelsea. 14% said you were a little upset, and would like to see him get a few touches on the ball. Another 8% couldn't have cared either way. Half of all voters said that it would be really cool to see him play, but realized that if he didn't, it was only one game. And last but not least, there were 20% of you that wanted him to not play at all so that his ankle could heal properly. I agreed both with the majority and the people who voted for the last option.

Cruise+Smith A-List Party for the Beckhams!

As anticipated by all of Hollywood, tons of A-Listers made their way to the Geffen Museum of Contemporary Art for one of the biggest parties of the year thrown by Tom Cruise and Will Smith. The occasion was to celebrate the arrival of their friends, the Beckham family. The word from the inside was that every time you turned around, there was another big time actor/singer/director/athlete you could think of: Lebron, Carmello, Jamie Fox, Forrest Whitaker, Rita Wilson, Ron Howard, Common, Doug E. Fresh, Stevie Wonder, Lil’ Kim, Eva Langoria, Brooke Shields, Simon Fuller (Simon Cowell), Brian Grazer, Wesley Snipes, Bruce Willis, Ashton Kutcher, Demi Moore, Jenny McCarthy, Jim Carey, and a bunch more (too many to name).

All of the fans were treated to live music from Will Smith and Doug E. Fresh, performing on the dance floor, doing "summer time" and a few other covers. But the big music surprise of the night was when Stevie Wonder performed with Doug E. Fresh beat-boxing the beats of "Superstitious," "My Cherie Amour" and a few more. The LA Galaxy players were in attendance to welcome their new teammate to their home town. And while obviously not being the stars of the night, took over the dance floor for the latte half of the night.

Poll Results: MLS ALL-STAR Game

Of the 177 people that voted on yesterday's poll regarding the winner of the MLS All-Star game, almost 70% of the votes went to the MLS players. The other 30% of the votes went to Celtic United. I was with the first half of the voters, and not just because they were right. I think our best players verses a Scottish team, would win 8 out of 10 times. And although there's the argument that they are not fit yet (which can contribute to some of their play), they have a Champions League qualifier game in two weeks. With all that said, I feel the MLS players really played well, and really controlled the tempo of the game.

Poll Results: MLS Cup Frontrunner

Almost 66% of the total votes (289) were given to the Houston Dynamo. This is no surprise b/c they've looked consistent and good, even with the absence of a lot of key players. DC United received about 17% of the total votes, followed by Dallas with 8.5%, NE with 6 % and KC with 2%. Although this may seem telling to who will win the MLS Cup, it's all about making the playoffs anyway you can, and then turning it on when the end of September comes. At least that seems to be the history of the league the last couple of years.

Poll Results: Beckham Mania

The results of the poll go as follows: 50% said they will follow more MLS. 10% said that it is still not that interesting. And 40% said that it would not change how much they already watch the MLS. 227 people participated in this poll. This type of information is promising for the future of the MLS.

New Galaxy Kit!!

The long awaited Galaxy kits are finally here. I think they're way better than the old colors, and the old design. I hated that mustard yellow color they had. They were almost as bad as the '94 denim USA WC jerseys. Hopefully the new jerseys will inspire the new La Galaxy roster to step it up. Tomorrow, the Tornado of David Beckham hits LA/US officially. Get ready!

FFI Soccer Magazine Launch!

Hey Guys,

Hope everyone is doing well. In case you didn’t already here, I finally published our first issue of FFI (stands for Full-Field Insider) Soccer Magazine. I came up with this idea about 18 months ago and with the help of a few very talented people we were able to finally make this dream become a reality. If you’ve ever started a business then you know how exciting (and scary) doing something like this can be, but I’ve done so much research and I’m so passionate about this project that there is no doubt in my mind that we can really change soccer and the soccer media in this country through this publication.

One thing that I really could use some help with is subscriptions. We need a solid readership in order to secure advertising dollars. We’re doing all kinds of grassroots promotions this summer by going out to all the tournaments and all the Galaxy and Chivas games and pretty much making it a point to be involved with any soccer-related activity in Southern California. However, we could definitely use some help from friends and family. If you guys could subscribe then it would be an absolutely huge help to the magazine and to me.

You’ll get a year’s subscription (12 issues) plus our preview issue that we just printed. Our magazine is very personality-driven in that we aim to bring our readers the character and lifestyle of the elite players in Southern California. Every issue will have lots of off-the-field stuff and funny editorial that you’ll enjoy even if you don’t know how to play. I’ve read what’s out there and I promise that we’ll deliver the best and most entertaining soccer magazine every single month. The yearly subscription is $28.87 which breaks down to a little more than $2 per month so I hope that’s affordable for everyone. The mag is 64 pages so it’s not like some little newsletter either. You’ll definitely get your money’s worth.

If you want to feel warm and fuzzy about where part of your dollar is going, we’re also starting a scholarship program to help high school aged kids pay for club soccer. The fees for soccer are really out of control (as much as $7k+ per year) and it limits underprivileged kids from getting exposure to college coaches. Our goal of the scholarship program is to help kids who are:

very talented soccer players
even better students
Have a lack of financial resources

We want to help kids like these eventually get to the college level where they can get a college degree. If they make it to the pros then that’s great too, but our main focus is to help this underprivileged kids achieve social upward mobility by going to college. Sports have helped so many people improve their lives and we want to help kids in soccer achieve things that they didn’t think were possible.

So please go to our website and subscribe to the magazine. The web address is www.ffisoccer.com and just click subscribe and it’ll walk you through the whole process. It’s really easy and takes like 3 minutes to complete.

I’ve been pouring my life into this project because I believe so strongly in it. I hope that you guys can help us out. Please forward this on to anyone that might be interested in the magazine and let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks again.

Sincerely,

Chris Martinez

New MLS '07 Playoff Format

I know some people reading this probably know how the new MLS playoff format works; so, to the aforementioned group, I’m not trying to insult your intelligence. To those of you that are in the dark, or confused about how the new format works, I'll explain it to you. It is very simple.

The top 2 teams from each conference automatically make the playoffs, and get home field advantage. If the season ended today, New York and New England would get home field advantage in the first round of the Eastern Conference Playoffs. Likewise in the west, Houston and Dallas would play at home in their first round games of the Western Conference Playoffs.

After the top 2 teams are chosen, that leaves 4 more spots out of 9. The rest of the 9 teams are put into a table from best to worst. Out of those 9, the best 4 teams make it to the playoffs, no matter what conference they are in. For example, if the league ended today, 3 Eastern Conference teams (DC, Kansas City, Columbus) and 1 Western Conference team (Chivas) would round out the rest of the playoff spots.
(MLS table reference: MLS East and West Standings as of 07/09

I think this format is better. It makes the regular season count for something for those teams that used to finish fourth in the lesser conference (depending on the year). With the new format, all the playoff spots from #4-8 can be taken from one conference. With the old way, teams used to sneak into the playoffs, and could advance as far as they wanted. Now if you have a bad regular season, you probably wont make it.

Poll Results: Will US return to Copa America?

The most recent poll 'After bringing their "B" side, should the US be invited back to Copa America next time around?' was an issue that raised a lot of heat from CONMEBOL (the S. American FIFA soccer region). A spokesman for CONMEBOL was very upset with our country for bringing our "B" side to their prestigious tournament. They didn't go as far as to not inviting us back in the years to come.

Politically, they want the US there. Whether or not we have a wealth of soccer talent, our country has a wealth of power around the world. Also, I think they like to have us because they think it's an easy win, and then they can say they beat "the Americans." Just my opinion.

I somewhat agree with what they are saying. However, as a country building its soccer culture, we need our best players on display for the Americans who are paying money to see them in the MLS. And like a lot of people, I want to see the USMNT to play a close match with our big stars against Argentina and other world soccer powers. That too might grow popularity of the sport in our country. Moreover, in a country where sports can make-it or break-it on how well they are marketed, we need to take advantage of the opportunity to market soccer during the designated league-calendar year. The more stars that play in any given game in the MLS, equates to a better product on the field. That’s what we are trying to sell in this country; a high quality product. We Americans only want the best. Marginal American fans are not going to wait for every fourth year (World Cup) to see that. They're going to want it every year, and that means the MLS needs to put out a high-quality product.

The result of this poll goes as follows. The poll was almost split 50/50. 52% said we should be invited back. 48% said that we should not be invited back. A total of 278 people voted for this poll.

Dear Soccer Participant:

I am writing to request your help in obtaining important information about your experience as a soccer player and spectator since your childhood up to present times. This is part of my Sport Management Master’s Thesis Research Project at California State University Long Beach. The purpose of the attached survey is to gather data and statistics that I will use to assess the current status of soccer in the United States, and to analyze and possibly create marketing suggestions on how to increase the game attendance in the MLS and other domestic soccer events as well as to boost the interest in the game in general.

The brief questionnaire covers themes on general interest in international and domestic soccer and level of soccer participation. The survey should require no more than 20 minutes to complete. You need to be over the age of 18 in order to quality for the survey. The report will present questionnaire results and analysis in the aggregate or anecdotally without attribution to individual respondents. Your voluntary participation will assist the soccer community in developing strategies on how to link soccer participants to soccer spectators. Your full anonymity and confidentiality is guaranteed. Due to the limited time I have to conduct this research, your prompt response will be crucial.

If you have any questions, please contact Georgi Katrov – M.A. Sport Management Candidate CSULB at (310) 634-5282, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You may also email me at georgi_katrov@yahoo.com. Thank you in advance for your assistance with this valuable undertaking.

Poll results for 'Euro blockbuster signings'

When asked which blockbuster signings would help their team the most, almost 85% said that Barcelona would benefit most from their new signings Henry and Abidal. Next in total votes, Bayer Munich received 10 % of the votes. Manchester United only received 5% of the votes, which is very surprising. And lastly, Juventus received 0% of the votes.

"Copa America Top Goal Scorer" poll results

As the critics would have it, Argentina and its goal scoring trio were the fan favorites picked to score the most goals (48% of votes) in the Copa America. Next to receive the second most votes (24%) was Mexico, after that, the US had a somewhat strong representation with (18%). Brazil, which was a surprise to me, fell in 4th place with only 10% of the votes and lastly Uruguay with 0 votes. In total, 437 people voted. Stay tuned to this blog following the Final of the Copa America to see which of you were right.
