Soccer Preview for the Weekend

Saturday:

Arsene%20Wenger%202.jpg

Arsenal v. Aston Villa: Arsenal welcomes Villa to the Emirates on Saturday after a difficult week following the horrible incident that occurred in Birmingham. Arsenal is stretched with many injuries in their team, and Aston Villa will be looking to capitalize on this. Martin O’Neill’s squad has been playing very well this season and of late has been playing some captivating football. Olof Mellberg has gotten back to fitness, and Villa will need his experience against Adebayor. Watch for Theo Walcott, this is his time to shine, and after he scored twice against Birmingham, he is full of confidence.

BundesLiga%20Logo.jpg

Schalke v. Bayern Munich: Schalke coach Mirko Slomka, is on thin ice with his chairman after back to back defeats in the last two weeks. Schalke has fallen into fifth position in the Bundesliga, nine points behind their opponent on Saturday, Bayern Munich. Bayern Munich barely scraped out an extra time win during the midweek in a DFB-Pokal match. Luca Toni was sent off in the match, which means Bayern will be without his services as well as Bastian Schweinsteiger, Lucio, Miroslav Klose, and Martin Demichelis. Frank Ribery will receive his first start in a month, but Bayern will be lacking in attacking options. This is a great opportunity for Schalke to get a win.

ronaldinho.jpg

Barcelona v. Atletico Madrid: Barcelona has been flying of late, and Lionel Messi has been a man possessed with the ball at his feet. Although Barca was lucky during the midweek to earn a draw in the Copa Del Rey, they will be visiting a lack luster side in Atletico Madrid. Atletico has been knocked out of both the UEFA Cup and the Copa Del Rey in recent weeks, and Barca will be looking to close the gap on Real Madrid at the top of the table. Ronaldinho will return to the side, after being rested in the midweek and the formidable attack of Barcelona will be on display.

Sunday:

Serie%20A%20Logo.jpg

Juventus v. Fiorentina: The game of the weekend in the Italian Serie A has Juventus hosting Fiorentina in the Stadio Olimpico in Turin. Fiorentina, sitting in fourth position, has been losing points in the last two matches with AC Milan nipping at their heels. Fiorentina has lost their leading goal scorer in Adrian Mutu, so it will be up to Christian Vieri to score some important goals. Juventus is very close to both Fiorentina and Milan on points, and they know that this a playoff for the Champions League. Nedved and center-back Chiellini will be missing for the Turin outfit, and if Fiorentina can beat Juve and Milan beat Lazio, three points will separate the three teams.

Philadelphia Gets an MLS Franchise

Sons%20of%20Ben%20Scarfs.jpg
The Son's of Ben are the Fanatical Followers of the Philadelphia Team

Philadelphia has been awarded the Sixteenth MLS Franchise on Thursday, and will start play in 2010.

Although the team is unnamed at the moment, the Philadelphia Independence is the leader in the clubhouse at the moment. The team will be playing in a soccer specific stadium which will hold 18,500 people on the Delaware River waterfront. The team will be placed in the suburb of Chester, southwest of Philadelphia, in hopes of redeveloping the area as well as providing a good environment for a match.

Philadelphia has been lacking a soccer team since 1980, and that was a women’s side. Philadelphia provides another great city where lively fans can create bitter rivalries with the surrounding teams from New York, Washington D.C., and the New England Revolution. Bitter rivalries and fanatical supporters will help the MLS, and I cannot wait until the Philadelphia franchise is competing against those specific teams.

Ireland set for Colombia friendly

Trapattoni Hopes to Make Ireland a Better Team

The Republic of Ireland will face Colombia in a friendly at English Premier League Fulham's Craven Cottage ground on May 29, the Football Associaction of Ireland has announced.

The game will be new manager Giovanni Trapattoni's second in charge and will conclude what officials hope will be an "intensive" period of preparation in the run-up to the Republic's 2010 World Cup qualifying programme.

Trapattoni takes up his new post on May 1 after he sees out the Austrian League season with Red Bull Salzburg, currently third in the table.

The veteran Italian boss will first conduct a week-long training camp in Portugal ahead of a friendly with Serbia at Croke Park on May 24.

This will then be followed with the game in London against Colombia, who are also due to play France in Paris on June 3.

Kansas City Looking to Expand Their Fan Base

kansas%20city%20wizards%20booze%20up.jpg
These Guys Hopefully Will Have More Fans This Season

The Press Release from the Kansas City Wizards stated:

The Kansas City Wizards and First Student will partner on a program providing FREE “Legends Express” buses to Kansas City Wizards matches at Community America Ballpark for groups of 50 or more. As part of the Wizards Soccer Shuttle program, groups will be picked up from anywhere inside the Kansas City metropolitan and surrounding areas, dropped off at Community America Ballpark at the Legends in KCK and then returned to their initial location after the match.

“We are pleased to form a relationship with First Student and provide large groups the opportunity for free transportation to Wizards matches via the Legends Express,” Wizards Executive Vice President Greg Cotton said. "The Wizards Soccer Shuttle program" will help us create a party atmosphere at the stadium that all fans of Kansas City's team enjoy.”...

Alcohol will be permitted, but not included, on the Legends Express vehicles for patrons 21 and older, excluding kegs. Tailgating at the stadium will also be available and encouraged in a special Legends-Express parking section. Participants in the Wizards Soccer Shuttle program will receive commemorative T-shirts as part of the package. Ticket prices for groups of 50+ start at $500 for berm seats.

Finally, the MLS is starting to try and tap into the true football fan, the fans that want to have a “booze up”, and be drunken chanters at matches. Kansas City has had a pitiful amount of people that have shown up for their matches, and now are looking to expand on their fan base. I was lucky enough to attend several Portland Timbers matches while attending University and their fans had arranged something similar to away matches at the Seattle Sounders stadium. Hopefully, this arrangement will work and catch on in the MLS, because they still need true football fans at the matches.

Poll Results: Which Champions League Two Leg Tie is the most Intriguing?

Arsenal v. Milan: 36.36%
Real Madrid v. Roma: 28.79%
Liverpool v. Inter Milan: 15.15%
Celtic v. Barcelona: 13.64%
Other: 6 %

The Arsenal/Milan tie was voted as the most intriguing tie in the Champions League. It was a bit surprising that the Liverpool/Inter tie wasn’t the second most voted upon tie, but the 2-0 defeat to Inter at Anfield might have thrown a wrench in the tie. The Roma/Madrid match on the other hand left the second leg wide open, whilst the football was very entertaining. Of any of the matches, the Celtic/Barca match had the best atmosphere, Parkhead was rocking, and Barca was playing some very attractive football. The greatest part of these ties is we’ve only seen the first leg, and none of the ties are done, any team can win their matchup.

S. Korea to refer N. Korea dispute to FIFA

south%20korea%20win.jpg

South Korea has decided to ask FIFA to mediate in a dispute with the North over its refusal to let the South play its national anthem and raise its flag at a World Cup match in Pyongyang next month, a news report said Tuesday.

During a meeting at the North Korean border city of Kaesong, the North insisted that both Koreas use a traditional folk song and a neutral flag in the March 26 match, Yonhap news agency reported. It cited Yoo Young-chol, a spokesman at the South's Korea Football Association.
South Korean negotiators rejected the North's insistence, saying that FIFA - soccer's world governing body - stipulates national anthems and flags should be used at official international matches, Yonhap said.

Korea Football Association officials could not be immediately be reached for comment on the report.

In recent years, the two Koreas have displayed the blue and white "unification flag" and used the traditional song "Arirang" at friendly sports events as part of their efforts to foster positive feelings toward reconciliation on the Korean peninsula.

Both sides marched together under the unification flag at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

The two Koreas fought a devastating three-year war that ended in 1953 in a truce, not a peace treaty, leaving them technically at war. Their relations have significantly warmed since the first summit between their leaders in 2000.

The two Koreas are in the same group with Turkmenistan and Jordan in the Asian third-round qualifying for the 2010 World Cup.

In opening matches last week, South Korea beat Turkmenistan 4-0 and North Korea defeated Jordan 1-0.

Carling Cup Final: Tottenham 2-1 Chelsea AET

Common You Spurs! That was the cry around Wembley stadium after Tottenham beat Chelsea in the Carling Cup Final. In a match in which Avram Grant’s team selection has come under fire, for not picking Ballack and Alex, and picking Lampard and Terry, Chelsea was second best on the day. Spurs went a goal down after forty minutes, and looked to be losing the plot a bit until the end of the half. Yet, after the break, Spurs were attacking with menace, and finally got a penalty on seventy minutes. After Berbatov converted the penalty, the match went into extra time. After just four minutes, a ball was swung in and Jonathan Woodgate got a head on the ball that luckily found the back of the net. Cech was found wanting, and Spurs held on to win the match after 120 minutes of play.

Roma 1-0 Fiorentina:

Roma pulled within nine points of Inter Milan in their victory against Fiorentina. Totti equaled the clubs record of 386 appearances, while Cicinho, the Brazilian right back both scored the winner and was sent off in the match. Fiorentina looked the better side in the beginning of the match, yet suffered a large set back when Adrian Mutu was injured and was forced to leave the match. From that point on, Roma was pressing forward and dominated the match until the goal was scored in the fifty-fourth minute. Roma defended stoutly there after until the final ten minutes where Fiorentina headed wide of the target twice and a few long range efforts, which somewhat troubled Doni. But Roma prevailed in the end, and earned the three points.

Bayern Munich 1-1 Hamburg

From the Allianz Arena, Hamburg was able to keep their Championship and Champions League spots alive with earning a draw away from home. Bayern Munich dominated most of the proceedings and most of the possession in the first half of the match. Ze Roberto and Toni both went close in the first half, but the strongest defense in the Bundesliga held. After the break, Bayern kept pouring on the pressure, but when Ze Roberto was caught in possession near his goal, Olic made him pay with a strike that beat Oliver Kahn. But after the goal was scored, “Cometh the Hour, Cometh the Man”, when Franck Ribery was put on, and immediately made a contribution by playing Ze Roberto in to score from close range. Van Bommel was sent off in the ninetieth minute, but by then, a draw was seen as a fair result.

Eduardo Da Silva:

Most people have seen the horrific injury that Eduardo Da Silva suffered in the match against Birmingham. He suffered a full compound fracture of his fibula and a dislocation of his ankle from Martin Taylor’s challenge. Silva’s doctor has praised the quickness in which Eduardo was treated because of the severity of the injury he could have lost his foot to amputation. With any luck, Eduardo will be able to sufficiently walk and run again, but his professional career is on shaky ground. My strike partner on one of my squads suffered the exact same injury, and luckily he is still playing today, hopefully Eduardo Da Silva will recover as my friend did.

Nigeria football bosses to name Vogts' replacement Thursday

african%20coach.jpg

The Nigerian Football Association, NFA, will name the new replacement for the head coaching job. Berti Vogts, who had quit the position after his teams disappointing display in the African Cup of Nations, earlier this month.

"We expect the board to appoint a new coach for the national team on Thursday following the recommendation of the NFA technical committee," said NFA spokesman Ademola Olajire.

Former Togo coach Stephen Keshi is the leading candidate of about a dozen coaches that are supposed to be interviewed for the job. The coahces will be interviewed by the country's technical comittee led by the NFA Board Member Taiwo Ogunjobi.

The other shortlisted candidates include former national team coach Shuaibu Amodu as well as former internationals Austin Eguavoen, Sunday Oliseh and Daniel Amokachi.

Vogts quit as national team coach even though his contract ran through until the 2010 World Cup in South Africa after the Super Eagles were knocked out of the 2008 Nations Cup in the quarter-finals by hosts Ghana earlier this month.

Preview to the Footballing Weekend

BundesLiga%20Logo.jpg

Saturday:

Bayern Leverkusen v. Shalke:

This is an important match between two sides with Champions League aspirations for next year. Both teams are tied on points in the Bundesliga, and will be hoping to put some distance between one another with a win. It will be interesting to see how both sides respond because both played in the midweek, with Leverkusen just playing yesterday, leaving only 48 hours in between matches. Look for Kevin Kuranyi to try and expose the tired back line of Leverkusen and the second half to become wide open, which should be great for the match.

Sunday:

Carling Cup Final, Tottenham v. Chelsea:

This hopefully will be a proper final at the Wembley Stadium. Tottenham will be looking for their first silverware in some time, and the Spurs fans will be biting their fingernails. Both teams have been playing some attractive football which has been very attractive. Chelsea will probably play a 4-3-3 with Anelka, Drogba, and Cole playing in the front three. Spurs will be playing with the diminutive Berbatov and Keane up front. On the spacious pitch at Wembley stadium, players like Huddelstone and Ballack will be able to spray balls all around the pitch and open up the defenses of both sides, enjoy.

Serie%20A%20Logo.jpg

Roma v. Fiorentina:

This is the cracking match in the Serie A this weekend. Roma played fairly well against a great Real Madrid side during the midweek. Totti was absolute quality, and his stringing of passes and controlling the flow of the game looked like a conductor of an orchestra. Although in this match, Roma will be playing against another striker on the peak of his form, Adrian Mutu. He has been missing in the big matches somewhat, and hopefully both strikers will put on a show for the masses.

Bayern Munich v. Hamburg:

This is another great match in the Bundesliga this weekend that puts the top of the league squad against the squad in third position. Bayern are playing at home, although two weekends ago, that didn’t help in the match against Werder Bremen in which they earned a draw. Bayern put on an impressive display against Aberdeen yesterday, while Hamburg traveled to Switzerland in the midweek to advance in the UEFA Cup. By the second half, the game should open up as it will in the Shalke/Bayern Leverkusen match, because of the exhaustion factor. Should be a quality match, with some great players on hand.

Capello wants England stars to adapt to his demands

fabio%20capello.jpg

Fabio Capello has been warning England's players that they need to adapt to his demands on tactics if they want to succeed as a national side.

Capello has been trying to impose his philosophy on the England players and was pleased somewhat with how the players responded in the match with Switzerland.

Capello believes that more discipline and better movement with and without the ball can increase their effectivness by twenty percent.

"English players are tactically fine, they know how to move tactically. But every coach has his own ideas and characteristics," Capello said.

"Disciplined on the pitch, with good movement as a team, and at the same time capable of stressing the qualities and abilities of each individual player.

"The England players will have to do what I ask of them. Against Switzerland what I asked over three days in terms of team movement and schemes was performed at 80 percent.

"I had seen most of them in action before, but watching them on TV doesn't allow you to appraise them off the ball. You can only verify their tactical level from the pitch."

Next up for the Italian and English National side is next month when they visit the French. He is already speaking English well enough to communicate with them, but wants and hopes to be fluent by the end of next month, even if some of the regional accents are proving impossible for him to understand.

"It is fundamental to speak the language, particularly before kick-off and during the interval, for tactical plans and psychological support. The latter can be more important at times than the former," Capello said.

"But I'm happy with my language progress. The only difficulty, when I tour Premier League matches, is that different people in different accents talk to me, and in some instances I can hardly understand a word!"

Gascoigne detained and sectioned at hotel

Gazza%20Arrested.jpg

Former England midfielder Paul Gascoigne is being held under the Mental Health Act, a police source said on Thursday.

The former Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United player, widely known as Gazza, was detained at the Hilton Hotel in Gateshead, on Wednesday evening.

Nobody was injured and there was no violence and no damage to the hotel.

"A 40-year-old man has been detained," a spokesman for Northumbria Police said.

"We had received a report of concern for a 40-year-old man staying at the hotel. The man was detained under the Mental Health Act."

A spokeswoman for Hilton Hotels said Gascoigne had been at the hotel for only a day.

She said there was no trouble before police arrived.

'He had only been staying with us for one night. He checked in on Wednesday morning,' she said. 'The call actually came in from the police so it was not from the Hilton.

'From our end the police call came in and we were obviously happy to help but there was nothing that happened at the hotel to make us think that there was anything wrong and once the police arrived that evening, he was escorted peacefully away.'

She added: 'It's a very sensitive situation.'

No members of staff at the hotel were available to comment. Gascoigne's last direct involvement in football was as manager of minor League club Kettering Town, a job he left in 2005.

He was capped 57 times by England between 1988 and 1998 scoring 10 goals, and made international headlines during the 1990 World Cup finals in Italy.

Famously bursting into tears after receiving a yellow card in England's semi-final against West Germany, which would have seen him suspended for the final if England had qualified, he became a household name and 'Gazzamania" was born.

He had already been identified as the most naturally gifted player of his generation, but hopes that his early promise would be fulfilled were seriously compromised playing for Spurs in the 1991 FA Cup final against Nottingham Forest.

Early in the match at Wembley Gascoigne made a reckless challenge on Gary Charles and seriously damaged his knee, delaying a move to Lazio in Italy for more than a year.

His Lazio career was also marred by injuries and inconsistent form and although he continued playing for England until 1998 and at the top level with Rangers, Everton and Middlesbrough, he never quite reached the heights he displayed as a youngster with Newcastle and Spurs.

His final ports of call as a player were with Chinese second division side Gansu Tianma before a brief reprise back in England with lowly Boston United.

Another short spell as manager of Kettering ended amid allegations that he had been drinking while at work.

Gascoigne has made tabloid headlines throughout the years for trouble off the field which he detailed in his 2004 biography "Gazza: My Story" including admissions of beating his wife Sheryl and other personal problems.

Ex-England manager Bobby Robson once endearingly referred to Gascoigne "being as daft as a brush" and while some of his antics were light-hearted pranks, a more troubled side to his character has always lurked in the background.

Arsenal's Goalkeeper's House is Haunted

manuel%20almunia.jpg
Haunted Almunia

If we thought Mad Jens Lehman was a bit bonkers, how about this story about the new number one goalkeeper for Arsenal. Manuel Almunia has claimed that his house in North London is haunted.

Almunia and his wife have been visited by ghosts or different sounds. Ana, Almunia’s wife, saw a monk like figure holding a candle in his hand, while Almunia didn’t see the ghost he was quoted saying he was “s*** scared”. Almunia has heard many sounds such as chains rattling or dragged on the ground. When he and his wife first moved in to the house, the couple was awoken by their stereo being turned on at full volume level.

Almunia wasn’t aware when he first moved in that his house was built on a former asylum. The Leavesden Hospital, which was closed in the 1990’s, housed many insane and mental patients. Apparently, Almunia has been so spooked recently, Arsene Wenger has given him permission to visit his wife at lunch so as to not leave his wife alone.

Boos for China as Japan beat hosts

japan%20beats%20china.jpg

Courtesy of soccerway.com

Chinese fans spared Japan but turned on their own team instead as the hosts went down 1-0 in the East Asian championships here on Wednesday.

Ear-splitting boos erupted in the final minutes and plastic bottles rained down on the pitch as Koji Yamase's early strike proved decisive for Asia's top team.

Local fans, who traditionally give the former colonial power a rough ride, remained unexpectedly quiet during Japan's national anthem and cut out the loud booing that marred their win over North Korea.

Perhaps it had something to do with newspaper articles in local press saying true football fans respect their opponents.

However tempers boiled over towards the end as the crowd chanted "fire him" at China Football Association chief Xie Yalong.

"I knew it would be a tough game but my players fought calmly," said Japan coach Takeshi Okada, whose squad missed Celtic star Shunsuke Nakamura and three key strikers including former Frankfurt player Naohiro Takahara because of poor form or injury.

"They fought patiently and produced a result," Okada added.

China's under-pressure Serbian coach Vladimir Petrovic praised his whole squad, including six under-23 players, for "performing aggressively."

"We were a little bit unlucky," he said. "The most important thing is our next World Cup qualifier against Australia (on March 26). I think we will never make the same mistake."

Japan have not lost to China in the past 10 years, and the record rarely looked in danger when Yamase scored from close-range on 17 minutes after Michihiro Yasuda's cross.

However Wang Dong's 25-yard strike cannoned off the right post and Japan lived dangerously in a goalmouth scramble. On 36 minutes, Li Jian miscued a promising header and Du Zhenyu also came close with a floated free-kick.

But Japan were within inches of doubling their lead as Yasuhito Endo's free-kick hit the post before half-time. The midfielder arrowed another dead-ball against the woodwork after the break.

Yamase, who scored twice in last month's friendly against Bosnia, squandered another chance on the hour-mark when he found himself one-on-one with Chinese 'keeper Zong Lei.

Naotake Hanyu also missed an easy chance moments later, and Yuzo Tashiro netted in the closing stages but it was flagged off for offside. Tashiro weaved through the Chinese defence but shot over in injury time, as Chinese fans began to get restless.

China have endured tough times since reaching their only World Cup finals in 2002 and finishing second in the 2004 Asian Cup, a slump highlighted by their first-round exit from last year's edition of the regional showpiece.

Anti-Japanese feeling reached a head after the 2004 final, when thousands of angry fans demonstrated against the visitors.

North Korea and South Korea were to clash later Wednesday in the four-nation round robin.

The Happiest Country on Earth

Denmark%27s%20Flag.jpg

CBS’ Sixty Minutes did a story yesterday on the happiest country on earth, and the winner was Denmark. Most people probably thought, as I did a place like Fiji, the Bahamas or another getaway island or sunny place would win. Yet, it was explained and it made sense that the modest living and modest expectations allow for more happiness in their lives.

One of the examples they used was the triumph of the 1992 Denmark football team winning the Euro’s. One expert explained that the country still probably hasn’t fully recovered from the euphoria because of its modest expectations. The team hadn’t even qualified for the Euro’s, yet tensions and problems in Eastern Europe slotted the Danes in the tournament. With such low expectations, after not even qualifying, they were able to play without fear of disappointment, and win the Euro’s.

In stark contrast, think about the almost unfair expectations that the English put on their players and coaches. The best comparison was when the English played the Danes in a warm up match for the World Cup qualifiers later rounds. The English were amazed that a team like Denmark could beat them, and beat them badly in Denmark. Yet, the more amazed of the fans were the Danes in Copenhagen, and were so happy, that they missed out on qualifying for the World Cup.

Yet, with all of the highs and lows that the Danish people have endured, they keep themselves on an even keel and the modest expectations and living help them stay happy.

Who is Zidane? You're Having a Laugh, Right?

zidane.jpg

Zidane hasn’t been out of football for very long, yet it seems that not everyone in France remembers who their French savior is.

Ronaldo is in hospital in Paris having undergone surgery for the career-threatening ruptured tendon in his knee that he suffered in last Wednesday’s match. While Ronaldo has been given many messages of support from fans all over the world, yet Zidane called the hospital to offer his own personally. It was more difficult than Zidane thought it would be because the hospital operator didn’t recognize Zidane’s name, and didn’t allow him to speak to Ronaldo.

Zidane retired only two years ago do people have such short memories that one of the best players of all time can’t talk to another great? Quite funny and also scary right?

Poll Results: Is the EPL playing an extra match abroad a good idea?

EPLlogo.jpg

Yes: 25%
No: 75%

Three quarters of the voters think that the EPL playing abroad for a match is a bad idea. Most of the International community believes that this is a bad idea as well, but why? It seems that every country or region has a specific or different reason why they believe this is a bad idea. The United States dislikes this idea greatly because with the great skill and pace that the EPL possesses, it will draw MLS fans away from their clubs. In England, many people don’t like the idea because a lot of the fans of the clubs are working class or middle class people. These hardcore fans, in most cases, couldn’t fly to America or Asia for a league match, and that takes away from their connection with their clubs.

It's obvious this is a money producing ploy, there is a reason why there is an early match in England every weekend, and it's to sell the league to Asia. There are many other objections and reasons for disliking this idea, what specifically are yours?
