Bob Bradley Facts
by FFI Soccer Magazine, Subscribe Today

Over the past year and change the American soccer public has gotten to know a lot more about US Men’s National Team Coach Bob Bradley. Those steel blue eyes, that coarse powerful voice, and that commanding stature. One look at Bob Bradley and you’ll know that he is someone that you NEVER want to mess with. We asked around and came up with the most remarkable Bob Bradley facts that prove that he is the toughest coach ON EARTH.
•	Bob Bradley can kill two stones with one bird.

•	When the Boogeyman goes to sleep at night, he checks his closet for Bob Bradley.

•	Bob Bradley once ate a whole cake before his friends could tell him there was a stripper in it.

•	Bob Bradley has the greatest Poker-Face of all time. He won the 1983 World Series of Poker, despite holding only a Joker, a Get out of Jail Free Monopoly card, a 2 of clubs, 7 of spades and a green #4 card from the game UNO.

•	Bob Bradley doesn’t actually write stuff down. Words assemble themselves out of fear.

•	If you have five dollars and Bob Bradley has five dollars, Bob Bradley has more money than you.

•	Bob Bradley always knows the EXACT location of Carmen San Diego.

•	Bob Bradley ordered a Big Mac at Burger King and got one.

•	The chief export of Bob Bradley is pain.

•	Bob Bradley can set ants on fire with a magnifying glass…at night.

•	Bob Bradley doesn’t read books. He stares them down until he gets the information he wants.

•	If it looks like chicken, tastes like chicken, and feels like chicken but Bob Bradley says its beef, then it's fucking beef.

•	Bob Bradley clogs the toilet even when he pisses

•	Bob Bradley’s dog is trained to pick up his own poop because Bob Bradley will not take shit from anyone.

•	Bob Bradley once bowled a 300. Without a ball. He wasn’t even in a bowling alley.

•	When Bob Bradley goes cow-tipping, he lifts a cow up and drop kicks it into the neighboring farm. All the other cows simply tip themselves over to keep from having to walk back in the dark.

(Sure, you might be saying to yourself that we stole these facts from Chuck Norris. All we have to say is that Chuck Norris recently saw a couple videos of Bob Bradley and now if you Google “Chuck Norris Facts” all that comes up is a picture of Bob Bradley. True story.)

I’m surprised Ronnie hasn’t been linked to MLS. I have to wonder and ask what your thoughts would be on him joining the New York Red Bulls. Could the number 10 playmaker bring back Pele type attention at Giants Stadium?

The 32-year-old Beckham reclaimed the position he held for 3 years through 2005. He has a $5.5 million base salary that could boom to as much as $250 million over 5 years with endorsements and profit sharing, according to the Galaxy.

Barcelona's Lionel Messi and Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo rose to third and fourth, with income of 23 million euros and 19.5 million euros, respectively. It's the first time they have been in the top 10.

Jose Mourinho, who left Chelsea in September, remains the top-paid coach -- even though he isn't currently in charge of a team -- with earnings of 29 million euros, France Football said.

England coach Fabio Capello is the next, with pay of 14.2 million euros, followed by Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson, who gets 7.4 million euros, the magazine said.

Did anyone ever think that the MLS and LA Galaxy would employ the highest paid player?

The newest Major League Soccer team will be called Seattle Sounders FC.

About half the 14,500 fans who voted on the team name wrote in Sounders. That was about 20 percent more than the choices offered by the club: Alliance, Republic or Seattle FC.

Club officials didn't want the traditional Sounders name, but fans had the write-in option. The Sounders name has been identified with soccer in Seattle since 1974.

The team also unveiled its logo Monday, which shows a silhouette of the Space Needle against a a blue and green background with the words "Seattle Sounders FC" written across it.

The Seattle MLS team already has deposits for 13,000 season tickets. Play begins in March 2009 in Qwest Field. Seattle will be the 15th team in the MLS.

I love the new name. What do you guys think?

If the Los Angeles Galaxy are going to be America’s version of the Galacticos, the stars have to shine. On Thursday night at the Home Depot Center, David Beckham and Landon Donovan did more than just shine. Each player finished with a goal and an assist as the Galaxy beat the San Jose Earthquakes, 2-0, in the Quakes’ first game back in MLS.

Before a packed house that included L.A. Lakers star Kobe Bryant, Galaxy coach Ruud Gullit fielded a more traditional 4-4-2. U23 standout Mike Randolph, inexplicably left out in last week’s 4-0 loss to Colorado, was back in the lineup, and Donovan started up top after being invisible on the flank last week.

The changes paid dividends in the 9th minute. A giveaway near midfield was picked up by Donovan, who turned and threaded a pass to Beckham, who made a quick diagonal run behind the defense. Beckham one-timed a shot between the legs of goalkeeper Joe Cannon to give the Galaxy the lead. It was Beckham’s first league goal, although he scored once in last year’s Superliga tournament.

Donovan himself then doubled the lead in the 37th minute. After flurried interplay near midfield, Beckham lofted a ball behind the Quakes defense. Donovan, who won two MLS Cups with San Jose earlier this decade, outran Ryan Cochrane to the ball and gracefully lifted the ball over the outstretched arms of an onrushing Cannon.

The second half was a more defensive battle as L.A. tightened the defense. San Jose, meanwhile, were unable to mount even a half-chance.

The Galaxy, playing without striker Carlos Ruiz, nearly iced the game through Alan Gordon, but his touch let him down and Nick Garcia was able to close him down before he released his shot.

It’s gotta be the shoes

Lisa Handschumacher is a former collegiate soccer player from Louisiana. As a youth, she competed for the Louisiana State ODP team and was a member of the Regional ODP Pool. When she’s not writing for FFI and fighting to rid the soccer world of pink, she’s pursuing her doctorate at USC.

There’s no denying that female athletes have certainly come a long way. No longer do we receive the strange looks cast by society when we declare that we have foregone the pom-pom/tap shoes route for cleats and shinguards. Surprisingly it hasn’t been all that long since there were very different norms defining the average after-school activity for girls. I still remember visiting my aunt and uncle several years ago who had two young children, a girl and a boy. My aunt got so excited when vividly describing my cousins’ futures as a little football player and a little cheerleader. Of course I bit my lip.

I almost started down that path myself. At four I started gymnastics, at five dance classes, at seven cheerleading. But in the end the “ballet” shoe just didn’t quite fit.

Everything fell into place when my parents finally signed me up for softball and soccer. While I could only endure one hour of softball and the corresponding standing-still-in-the-overgrown-grass-getting-eaten-alive-by-mosquitoes (softball was the most boring sport EVER as far as I was concerned), soccer and I were a match made in heaven. Thank God I didn’t have tap and cheer my way into college.

Women’s soccer certainly came into its own around the turn of the 21st century with the U.S. collecting its share of World Cup wins and Olympic gold medals, as well as the media attention it deserved. It is safe to say that female soccer players today have finally earned a fair share of respect from the general public and have become coveted members of the sport community.

Having said this, there are a few little things that still surprise the hell out of me. I recently was in desperate need of a new pair of cleats. While I only play recreationally now, I still wanted a decent pair of boots that might last me a year or so. I decided against my standard Copas to try something new. Casually flipping through the latest Eurosport catalogue, I began to skim the women’s section for potential cleats.

Hmmm. What did I find? Pink cleats. Seriously?

Although I’m all for female touches here and there, pink cleats might be stretching it a bit. Is it too much to design a woman’s shoe without making it pink? Some of us still play soccer past the age of 11, so polk-a-dots on cleats might be over the top as well. I may be the minority, but I lean to women’s shoes because of the different size scale and the thought that perhaps they are built specifically for a woman’s foot. I mean, aren’t there highly paid design teams that use the latest technology and innovative ideas in marketing for the female athlete? I would like to think that this involves a bit more than just adding hearts and flowers to whatever they created for the boys.

“Make it pink, turquoise, or lavender, and slap a ‘woman’s’ label on it, and you’re good to go.” Bob, Dan, and Jim in Marketing must be saying.

Apparently classic black is a color deemed too masculine for the ladies. Honestly, all I want is a pair of the best male cleats resized to fit my size 7 foot with a higher arch. I even thought to try kid’s (boy’s) cleats, but of course I couldn’t get them in real leather, or even the best synthetic material. All of a sudden, being a female athlete really limits your options once again.

In writing this article, I checked out the catalogues once again for final inspiration and among the shirts, shorts, and hair-ties I saw something else that astounded me: purses. Are they really advertising purses on the same pages as cleats? Maybe they think that we can fit our matching pink boots inside our matching pink purses. Thanks Mr Soccer Marketing Man, but I’ll stick to Adidas soccer bags on the pitch and Dolce and Gabbana on my arm. I still have taste after all.

FC Barcelona has reportedly asked Ronaldinho's agent for a meeting in an attempt to improve relations with the Brazil forward.

Barcelona hopes to convince Roberto De Assis, who is also Ronaldinho's brother, that it still believes in the 28-year-old player despite his below-par season, news agency Efe said Thursday.

The two-time FIFA world player of the year, who has missed the past three league matches and 13 over the season due to a series of physical problems, has been widely accused of a lack of commitment to the club.

Doubts about Ronaldinho's future grew this week when Italian paper Gazzetta dello Sport reported that De Assis recently met AC Milan vice president Adriano Galliani to discuss a possible move. Sports daily Marca has added that De Assis had also spoken to officials from Inter Milan.

While the buy-out clause attached to Ronaldinho's contract - which runs to 2010 - is €125 million (US$194 million), De Assis is reportedly threatening to invoke Article 17 of FIFA's transfer rules, which allow a player under 28 to end his contract after three years.

This would allow the Brazilian to leave Barcelona for a much lower fee - reportedly €16 million (US$25 million).

Ronaldinho joined Barcelona from Paris Saint-Germain in 2003 and helped the club win the Champions League in 2006 and the Spanish league title in 2005 and '06.

The Catalan team lies third in the Spanish league with 58 points, seven behind leader Real Madrid. Lacking Ronaldinho, Barcelona won 1-0 at Schalke in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals on Tuesday.

Team News:
Roberto Carlos is back in Fenerbahce's squad after a shin injury but is likely to start Wednesday's Champions League quarter-final first leg on the bench.

Fellow defender Onder Turaci will probably play at right-back in place of the suspended Gokhan Gonul.

Chelsea's Frank Lampard returns to the squad after overcoming a stomach upset.

Goalkeeper Petr Cech is still out with an ankle injury but Didier Drogba has shaken off a knock that he picked up in Sunday's 1-0 win over Middlesbrough.

If Roberto Carlos is left on the bench, Fenerbahce will instead look to midfielder Ugur Boral to make his trademark surging runs down the flank.

Coach Zico will be looking to build an advantage at the Sukru Saracoglu stadium to take to Stamford Bridge for the second leg.

The Turkish champions are unbeaten in their last 11 European games at home, with Inter Milan, PSV Eindhoven and Sevilla among those to have come unstuck in Istanbul this season.

Fernerbahce sit top of the Turkish Super Lig by two points after beating city rivals Besiktas on Saturday and remain favourites to defend their title with 19 wins from 28 games.

They have won their last four league matches and stunned Sevilla in the last 16 of the Champions League, winning 3-2 in Spain before eventually progressing on penalties.

Chelsea have the best defensive record in the Champions League this season, with only two goals conceded in eight matches and none in the last six.

Since losing to Barnsley on 8 March, Avram Grant's side have won four of their last five Premier League games, only dropping points in a draw with Tottenham.

Roma skipper Francesco Totti has been ruled out of Tuesday's Champions League quarter-final first leg after suffering a thigh injury on Saturday. Totti, Roma's top scorer with 14 goals, is set to be replaced by Mirko Vucinic. Totti suffered his injury in Saturday's 1-1 Serie A draw at Cagliari but hopes to return for the second leg at Old Trafford. In his absence, Roma will look to Vucinic, who has scored four goals in the Champions League this season and was rested for the match against Cagliari.

Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar looks set to return after a groin injury but Michael Carrick is a doubt with a slight hamstring strain.

Mikael Silvestre has overcome a knee ligament injury, but Nani and Louis Saha are both ruled out by injury. French defender Silvestre has not played since suffering the injury against Everton in September.

His return boosts Sir Alex Ferguson's squad after Carrick, Patrice Evra, Rio Ferdinand and Ryan Giggs complained of knocks after Saturday's emphatic 4-0 win over Aston Villa.

Central defender Juan has a foot problem so Christian Panucci looks set to cover with Marco Cassetti, Max Tonetto and Cicinho battling for his right-back slot.

The two sides met twice last season at the same stage of the competition, with Roma winning 2-1 in Italy before suffering a humiliating 7-1 thrashing in Manchester.

They have already played twice in this season's group stage, United winning 1-0 at home before the teams drew 1-1 in Rome. The matches have been marred by violence between supporters and both clubs have been working on ways to avoid further problems. Italian authorities are providing free transport to the stadium for United fans in a bid to keep them away from any possible trouble. They have also introduced a voucher system for ticket collection in a bid to stop touts.
