Joey Barton: A Talented Footballer and Trouble Maker

Sam Allardyce will be waking up this morning with a bigger headache than anyone will have on New Years day. Not only is he under ever-increasing pressure after a deserved defeat at Wigan, following a home draw with bottom club Derby, Joey Barton is again in trouble after being arrested on suspicion of assault in his home town of Liverpool.

Joey Barton in Trouble Again

This isn’t the first incident with Joey Barton, who had a very checkered past while with Manchester City. In 2005, Barton was sent home from a pre-season tournament in Thailand, after assaulting a fifteen year old Everton supporter who had provoked Barton by kicking and verbally abusing him. Then after recently signing his new contract at City, he put a cigar out in a youth player’s eye, after Barton caught him trying to set his shirt alight. These two incidents fining him around 400,000 dollars and anger management therapy, although, those actions haven’t proven effective.

It’s a shame about Joey Barton because he is a quality footballer when he keeps his emotions in check. Barton does many things well on the pitch, including scoring many goals, and goals of vital importance, that either earn a point or three points. He has a gift to grab the game by the “scruff of the neck”, and dominate a match with his skill and drive.

It’s sad, but if the charges are true, Newcastle might have to get rid of a talented and important player, whilst on the brink of losing their manager as well.

Dida Set to Be Charged

UEFA will charge AC Milan goalkeeper Dida with improper conduct for his behavior during the Champions League loss against Celtic.

Here’s the video clip of Dida’s acting performance for those of you who missed it:

It’s still unclear what the punishment will be. What do you think should happen to Dida? Should he face suspension? Or will a fine be punishment enough?

Ricardo Clark Receives a Nine Game Suspension

Last weekend, Houston's Ricardo Clark kicked Carlos Ruiz during the 3-0 win against FC Dallas. Here's a YouTube video of the altercation:

Yesterday, MLS decided Clark's fate, which included a nine game suspension. The suspension will go on through the playoffs and the beginning next season. Clark will also not be allowed to play in any exhibition matches for Houston where admission is charged, but he will still be able to participate in FIFA sanctioned games such as the CONCACAF Champions Cup.

He was also fined an additional $10,000 which shouldn't put too much of a dent into his $195,000 a year salary. (He was already fined $250 for the red card.)

While the punishment is a little more severe than the crime, MLS Commission Don Garber made it clear that “this is unacceptable behavior from an MLS player.”

Garber went on to add that, “In taking this action, Major League Soccer is sending a signal that it will not accept reckless and dangerous behavior on its fields. If there is a repeat of this kind of behavior by any MLS player, even firmer sanctions can be expected in the future.”

Ruiz was also shown a red card that game for his role in the altercation, but the League hasn't announced his fate yet.

Looking at the video, Clark clearly kicks Ruiz, but knowing Ruiz's reputation - he had to have done something to warrant an attack from a normally mild player.

Check out what Soccer By Ives had to say about Clark's suspension.

OBJ would love to know your take on Ricardo Clark's suspension? Was it the correct one or was it too harsh?

Cheating at the WWC

This has been a week of scandal and cheating it seems in the world of soccer, and the Women's World Cup hasn't been ammuned to these issues.

It turns out that during one of Denmark's team meets two men with cameras were hiding between a two-way mirror. It turns out that right before Denmark was to have their strategy meeting for their game against China, two men with cameras were discovered hiding between a two-way mirror.

FIFA decided that the men weren't connected to any of the teams, but here at OBJ, we still find it a little suspicious. Whethere or not they were afflilated with any teams, the matter still remains that they were trying to record Denmark's meeting - it seems a little fishy.

China won that game 3-2.

Any security?

Near the end of the game last night in Carson, there were an extreme amount of smoke bombs being thrown on to the field from the Chivas supporter section, Legion 1908. It got so bad in front of Joe Cannon's goal that the referee had to stop the game for a few minutes. This begs the question - where was security and how did they get all those smoke bombs in?

There's No Punching in Soccer

It seems Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari forgot that he was at a soccer match and not a boxing match yesterday. After Serbia held Portugal to a 1-1 draw, Portugal winger Ricardo Quaresma and Serbia's Ivica Dragutinovic decided to exchange a few words. Then Scolari decided to intervene. Television broadcasts show that Dragutinovic slapped Scolari's arm away... and Scolari's answer? A left jab.

Of course both parties have different sides of the story - Scolari says he didn't touch Dragutinovic and Dragutinovic swears Scolari brushed his cheek.

It seems that so far only Dragutinovic has been the only one that was punished, as he was shown a red card after the final whistle.

Guilty as Charged

Earlier in the week, OBJ called Lithuania midfielder Saulius Mikoliunas out for diving and essentially cheating. UEFA has agreed and decided to investigate the incident. UEFA will look at the case on September 19th, and Mikoliunas can be suspended as long as the committee feels in necessary.

Check OBJ's original blog on the incident.

Saulius Mikoliunas, busted for cheating

Saulius Mikoliunas, Cheater (Futbolas).

Saulius Mikoliunas dive against Scotland was appalling and OBJ is dedicated to calling cheaters out. Lithuania as organization should also be ashamed for this blatant attempt to put the center official under this un-needed pressure.

Mikoliunas and Lithuania, soccer fans and Scotland are waiting for our apology.

On a happy note the Scots won 3-1.
