Golden Balls tops richest footballer list

David Beckham regained the title of soccer's highest-paid player, according to France Football magazine.

Beckham's earnings from salary and endorsements soared 82 percent to 31 million euros ($48.9 million) following his switch to the Los Angeles Galaxy from Real Madrid, lifting him above Barcelona's Ronaldinho, whose income was unchanged at 24.1 million euros, the magazine's annual survey said.

The 32-year-old Beckham reclaimed the position he held for 3 years through 2005. He has a $5.5 million base salary that could boom to as much as $250 million over 5 years with endorsements and profit sharing, according to the Galaxy.

Barcelona's Lionel Messi and Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo rose to third and fourth, with income of 23 million euros and 19.5 million euros, respectively. It's the first time they have been in the top 10.

Jose Mourinho, who left Chelsea in September, remains the top-paid coach -- even though he isn't currently in charge of a team -- with earnings of 29 million euros, France Football said.

England coach Fabio Capello is the next, with pay of 14.2 million euros, followed by Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson, who gets 7.4 million euros, the magazine said.

Did anyone ever think that the MLS and LA Galaxy would employ the highest paid player?

Kansas City Looking to Expand Their Fan Base

These Guys Hopefully Will Have More Fans This Season

The Press Release from the Kansas City Wizards stated:

The Kansas City Wizards and First Student will partner on a program providing FREE “Legends Express” buses to Kansas City Wizards matches at Community America Ballpark for groups of 50 or more. As part of the Wizards Soccer Shuttle program, groups will be picked up from anywhere inside the Kansas City metropolitan and surrounding areas, dropped off at Community America Ballpark at the Legends in KCK and then returned to their initial location after the match.

“We are pleased to form a relationship with First Student and provide large groups the opportunity for free transportation to Wizards matches via the Legends Express,” Wizards Executive Vice President Greg Cotton said. "The Wizards Soccer Shuttle program" will help us create a party atmosphere at the stadium that all fans of Kansas City's team enjoy.”...

Alcohol will be permitted, but not included, on the Legends Express vehicles for patrons 21 and older, excluding kegs. Tailgating at the stadium will also be available and encouraged in a special Legends-Express parking section. Participants in the Wizards Soccer Shuttle program will receive commemorative T-shirts as part of the package. Ticket prices for groups of 50+ start at $500 for berm seats.

Finally, the MLS is starting to try and tap into the true football fan, the fans that want to have a “booze up”, and be drunken chanters at matches. Kansas City has had a pitiful amount of people that have shown up for their matches, and now are looking to expand on their fan base. I was lucky enough to attend several Portland Timbers matches while attending University and their fans had arranged something similar to away matches at the Seattle Sounders stadium. Hopefully, this arrangement will work and catch on in the MLS, because they still need true football fans at the matches.

Old Trafford's Atmosphere Problem

Manchester United boss, Sir Alex Ferguson, compared the Old Trafford crowd this weekend against Birmingham, “as quiet as a funereal”. Yet, the fans have been told that if they stand up at the match, they will be held accountable and have their season tickets taken away. Obviously, there is a problem between the old hardcore fans that love to contribute to the ambiance of the match, and the new money and families at the match. A solution to these problems is to bring back the standing only sections, thus eliminating both problems, and bringing in more fans.

Standing%20Room%20Only.jpg
What's Wrong With This Picture?

Standing room only sections were torn down and thrown out of most European venues after several disasters in matches which caused deaths and injuries. While the dangers of overcrowding and injuries are still prevalent, if limitations are put on how many are admitted and the standing only sections are on the lower level it could work. If standing room only sections are brought back into approved stadiums, the atmosphere with the fans and match would be at an epic level. As well, the club could reduce their expensive prices somewhat, allowing more of the population to frequent the matches and get out and support their clubs.

Looking at this idea from a negative light, standing room only stands caused many problems in the past, with many of the hooligans and overcrowding coming from these sections. Without seats, the club was able to shove as many people into one area, bringing in more money, but causing more problems. Yet, with many of these issues greatly reduced or solved, hooliganism the biggest, standing room only could be a great success.

What are you thoughts on the issue?
