Golden Balls tops richest footballer list

David Beckham regained the title of soccer's highest-paid player, according to France Football magazine.

Beckham's earnings from salary and endorsements soared 82 percent to 31 million euros ($48.9 million) following his switch to the Los Angeles Galaxy from Real Madrid, lifting him above Barcelona's Ronaldinho, whose income was unchanged at 24.1 million euros, the magazine's annual survey said.

The 32-year-old Beckham reclaimed the position he held for 3 years through 2005. He has a $5.5 million base salary that could boom to as much as $250 million over 5 years with endorsements and profit sharing, according to the Galaxy.

Barcelona's Lionel Messi and Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo rose to third and fourth, with income of 23 million euros and 19.5 million euros, respectively. It's the first time they have been in the top 10.

Jose Mourinho, who left Chelsea in September, remains the top-paid coach -- even though he isn't currently in charge of a team -- with earnings of 29 million euros, France Football said.

England coach Fabio Capello is the next, with pay of 14.2 million euros, followed by Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson, who gets 7.4 million euros, the magazine said.

Did anyone ever think that the MLS and LA Galaxy would employ the highest paid player?

Beckham Gets The Cold Shoulder In Asia

empty.bmp
Are more empty stadiums in MLS and Beckhams future?

David Beckham's move to Major League Soccer may have been good for his wallet but it has apparently not helped his popularity in Asia.

Empty seats and surprising indifference greeted football's greatest star, who was mobbed like a rockstar on his first trip to the region, as he completed an Asian tour with LA Galaxy.

Just 11,000 paying fans turned up to watch Galaxy's lethargic performance here, leaving most of Hong Kong Stadium empty, while similar numbers watched the team in Shanghai.

Dozens, rather than hundreds, of supporters greeted the former Real Madrid and Manchester United man at Hong Kong airport, while screaming fans at the team hotel were notable by their absence.

Beckham, whose England future has also been clouded by the US move, thanked fans for an "incredible" welcome. However, he may have been wondering why so many of them didn't turn up.

"It's been incredible," he said. "It's been a great tour for us. Everywhere we've gone, people have been amazing to the team and showed us lot of love."

Loyal supporters here said Beckham's profile had dipped since his transfer to Galaxy on a reported 250-million-dollar, five-year deal.

"The fact that you don't get to watch the American league here so much, and the fact he's not playing in the English Premier League or in Spain is a big factor," said fan Chuck Lee.

"He's handsome, he's attractive," said Esther Chan. "But I think the Galaxy is not so good at football."
The sentiment was borne out on the field as Beckham looked in a different class to his team-mates, who were content to feed him the ball and wait for his pin-point crosses.

Despite two converted penalties by the Englishman, Galaxy were beaten by South China invitational in a poor advertisement for US football -- and, by extension, for Brand Beckham.

However, he said the tour had been important for the team, coached by Ruud Gullit, as it prepares for the upcoming US season.

"Team spirit can win a game or a championship," Beckham said.

"In these three weeks we've had good bonding between the players on and off the field. That's what it's all about."

Beckham-mania was at its height in 2001, when adoring crowds followed his every move on visits to Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand with Manchester United.

One Bangkok fan placed a sculpture of his idol in a Buddhist temple, while a three-metre (10-foot) chocolate image of the young midfielder was created in Japan.

During the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea, Beckham's distinctive mohawk hairdo spawned legions of imitators. In 2003, 1,000 screaming fans greeted him as he arrived in Japan with Real Madrid.

Last year, Beckham played in front of huge crowds in Sydney and Wellington, with 15,000 schoolchildren turning up just to watch him train.

And the current tour has not been without its moments. Hundreds of fans and media caused chaos at a Shanghai hospital when Beckham visited leukaemia patients there.

However many Asian fans have shown they are no longer willing to pay high ticket prices to watch Beckham, proving the adage that one player cannot carry the team.

"This is the Galaxy, not Real Madrid," commented Hong Kong Football Association chairman Brian Leung.

So much for Beckham being a voice for MLS

tj%20simmers.jpg
LA Times, T.J. Simers showing his love for LA sports and hate for soccer and the Galaxy:

So much for Beckham being a voice for MLS

It's been 213 days since David Beckham arrived in Los Angeles, and knowing how busy he was with those eight games they had him playing last season, I elected not to bother the guy.

Now as you know, folks such as Kobe Bryant, Jeff Kent and Garret Anderson have the ability to play and talk on the same day, which just has to be dumbfounding to Beckham.

When I put in an interview request Friday, I was told he might be tired, and now I understand why England's soccer coach didn't think Beckham was fit enough to join his lads last week for a game against Switzerland.

Several entertainment sites, though, reported Beckham arrived at a pre-Grammy party at Hollywood's Club Central about 1 a.m. Sunday, dancing with Janet Jackson. Tired as he was, he must've gotten a nap.

The Galaxy said Beckham would need some warning time before he could talk, 213 days apparently not enough, and so instead of Friday or Saturday, an interview was scheduled for Monday. And later canceled.

"He's not doing media Monday," a Galaxy spokesman said, probably taking the time to do another episode of "Snoop Dogg's Father Hood." "He's also not doing any one-on-ones."

Everyone has his price, of course, so the other day at a Madonna fundraiser, I wasn't surprised to learn my old gal pal Salma Hayek hadpaid $350,000 for an hour and a one-on-one with Beckham.

Haven't heard from her yet, but I couldn't possibly accept such a thing, or find something to discuss for an hour with a soccer player who has done so little in this country. We talk about the one goal he scored last year, and then what?

Initially, when I was told I would be talking to Beckham on Monday, I had done some homework. Beyond looking pretty, there isn't much there.

He has tattoos running from wrist to shoulder on his right arm, and I probably would have asked for a look at the new $5,000 tattoo on his left arm -- the reclining, bare-breasted angel who is supposed to be his wife.

I did a lot of reading on the Internet, and no one seems to refer to Posh as an angel, but if she's buying it, good for him. That's what they must mean when they say "bend it like Beckham."

THE ONLY thing going on with Beckham these days appears to be his underwear ad, which is just perfect for him because all he has to do is lie there and say nothing.

Huge billboards will go up soon showing him with his chest bare -- and isn't it always? -- and his briefs appearing a size too small. You'd think a guy with as much money as he's got could find underwear that fit.

I'd ask him, but he's in hiding, which is odd when you realize AEG President Tim Leiweke spent $250 million of Philip Anschutz's money to bring the guy to L.A. to hype soccer. As we know from watching the Kings, player acquisitions are not Leiweke's strong point.

So far Beckham has done nothing to advance the sport in L.A., his arrival here the most overblown story of last year, in part because the bloke's PR handlers -- and he has several -- carry more weight than the folks signing his checks.

Talk to Galaxy GM Alexi Lalas and he sounds as if Beckham's work is already done here, proclaiming Beckham "is at an entirely different level" than Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan.Beckham might be Leiweke's "favorite athlete," as he says, but he dismisses Lalas' remarks by noting Beckham "isn't even as big as KobeBryant."

When Leiweke talks about the crowds that Beckham draws overseas or the jerseys he sells around the world, who cares?

I thought he was brought to L.A. to put soccer on the U.S. map and make MLS or MSL or whatever they call the soccer league that ranks here right up there with the Arena league into something more meaningful.

Beckham is not a goal-scorer, and apparently not much of a talker, making him a strange choice to be a pitchman in this country. Kwame Brown delivered more than Beckham last year.

Beckham had every chance last year to capitalize on his arrival and sell soccer locally while recovering from an injury. He could've made himself available for fawning radio or TV interviews, and an occasional joust with a columnist.

But some journalists overseas have suggested Beckham is an intellectual lightweight, his wife doing all the talking for him, which might explain why his handlers don't want to leave him alone with a reporter.

OK, so put me with Posh.

The Yanks Are Coming

Landon%20Donavon.jpg
Landon Donavon Will Be Playing
his Galaxy Teammate David Beckham

Well there are reports out today that the United States Men’s National Team will be going to Wembley Stadium in late May for a friendly against our Colonial Cousin's. This is a perfect situation for everyone involved in either Association of soccer, especially those two teammates on the LA Galaxy.

Firstly, this is a big test for the United States. Yes, England didn’t qualify for EURO 2008, but it’s hard to dismiss that their top squad of players are not world class. As well, this is a big test in a very nasty environment on European soil to get the nerves out before they play against Spain. As well, the dynamic of playing our colonial cousin’s, on their soil, has to be salivating to anyone reading this.

Secondly, this is the chance Fabio Capello to start David Beckham and give him his century of caps for his country. It’s the perfect situation, Becks playing against some of the players he plays against in the MLS as well as his own teammate Landon Donovan. Landon has seemed to be lacking an influence on the past few International matches, but with Becks on the pitch, you know Landon will want to put in a great performance. The dynamic will be quite interesting, especially because no one person knows how good or stable the relationship between the “poster boy” of American soccer and the “poster boy” for the entire game of soccer, really is.

What are your thoughts on this tasty fixture?

Becks Has Some New Ink

David Beckham has some new tattoos on his other forearm that are apparently inspired by a character on the hit T.V. show “Prisonbreak”.

David%20Beckham%27s%20Forearm.jpg
Becks' New Ink

Michael Scofield, the character in Prison Break has his entire body covered in tattoos that had helped his character and his brother break out of jail. David Beckham liked the Hindi like tattoo so much, that he decided to copy it and place it on his forearm. The only problem with his tattoo in that area is that it was supposed to be reserved for a daughter that he wanted to have allegedly. Maybe he has something else planned, but in any case, that forearm has another purpose, supporting a T.V. show.

Poll Results: What was your favorite US soccer moment of 2007?

Gold Cup Champions and Win over Mexico: 41.67%
David Beckham’s Arrival: 25%
Under 20’s Team Success: 16.67%
Houston Dynamo’s Repeat: 8.33%
Other: 8.33%

Well the results are in and the majority of the voters believed that the United States success in the Gold Cup was the most memorable moment. Of course, beating Mexico is always wonderful and doing it to win silverware is even better!

Benny's Midas Touch

Beckham’s arrival in the United States, although not prolific, was very effective in providing a platform for soccer to build in the United States. While the US Under-20 world cup displayed that the United States possesses talent to build with in the near future.

Fans sell Beckham leftovers through Internet auction

Fans of football superstar David Beckham are cashing in on his recent visit to New Zealand by trying to sell his food scraps and dirty dishes on the Internet.
Among the items put up for sale on New Zealand website Trade Me are a half eaten corn cob, a nearly empty bottle of Coca-Cola and a single French fry, which the seller said Beckham had dropped while eating on a Wellington street.

The chewed corn cob and soft drink came from a chicken restaurant where Beckham ate on Thursday night. The seller was also auctioning the plate and knife and fork she claimed he had used at the restaurant.

Beckham Mania, a bit over the top

The French fry attracted an initial bid of one dollar (75 US cents), rising to three dollars by late afternoon Wednesday.

Beckham was in the New Zealand capital for three days last week with his LA Galaxy football team to play an exhibition match against local team Wellington Phoenix.

He left on Sunday to rejoin wife Victoria as her reformed group The Spice Girls played a concert in Vancouver.

So what's your thoughts on this hilarious matter?

Galaxy practice draws 15,000 in New Zealand

The Associated Press noted the Los Angeles Galaxy with David Beckham drew a crowd of 15,000 to its training session in Wellington, New Zealand ahead of its Saturday exhibition game against the Wellington Phoenix.

The game is expected to be a 35,000 sellout in a stadium that has filled only for the All Blacks national rugby team and an annual rugby tournament.

The biggest soccer crowd in New Zealand's history was 32,000 for a World Cup qualifier against Kuwait in Auckland in 1982.

Beckham briefly addressed the crowd via stadium's video screen.

"Notoriously, [New Zealand] is big on rugby but I hope that we can change that, just for one day and hopefully going forward because I've seen the potential football or soccer has in America," said Beckham, who is making his first visit to New Zealand.

The Galaxy drew 80,000 fans Tuesday's game against Sydney FC in Australia, a 5-3 Galaxy loss in which Beckham scored on a free kick.

$tyle over Substance?

Don Garber called David Beckham a "marketing machine". Los Angeles has style and Beckham is on pace to earn his $250 million deal over the next four years of his five year deal. The question Objectivo soccer fans have is, Can they have $uccess on the field?

Can these three return LA to the success Galaxy fans strive for?

Beckham Returns to Training

Yesterday, David Beckham joined the rest the of the Galaxy for a light training. It was the first time since he's knee injury that Beckham has practiced with the team.

The question is now when will Beckham return. The brass at the Galaxy are hoping for a return against for the last home game of the season against the Red Bulls.

Beckham Named to Fifpro's List

Galaxy star David Beckham is now the first MLS player to be on list for Fifpro's World Best XI Player Awards.

Members of the worldwide players' union were invited to vote for a keeper, four defenders, three midfielders and three forwards. The winners will be announced on Oct. 5.

Beckham Heads to England

But not for the reason one would think.

Beckham arrived in England Thursday to visit his father, who had suffered a heart attack. Beckham's publicist Simon Oliveira said that Ted Beckham had surgery and is in intensive care.

The two Beckhams have had a rocky relationship as Ted Beckham published a book "David Beckham: My Son" without the younger Beckham's permission.

When Will Becks be Healthy?

Yesterday, Galaxy General Manager Alexi Lalas came out with a statement saying that the club will decide when David Beckham is healthy, not Beckham. Both Frank Yallop and Lalas allowed Beckham to make the call last time, which led to the knee injury.

becks-d.gif

But is Lalas decision for the welfare of Beckham or is it for the club? If Becks is healthy, he will most probably miss the final Galaxy games, as they are at the same time as England games. But, if he is determined not to be able to play - he would at least be attending the Galaxy games and sitting up in the suites, so the fans can at least see him.

Beckham relegated to 2nd Division

If MLS relegated teams, David Beckham would be playing for MLS's second division next year. Can you imagine being David Beckham and having to play in a second division, in any country?

Luckily for the Galaxy, Toronto and Real Salt Lake, MLS just haven't figured out a lucrative way to make relegation work in the states.

Beckham on ESPN

If you missed David Beckham's half-time interview during the Galaxy / Chivas game, don't fear - you didn't miss much. The ordinary questions where asked - How's your knee? When are you going to play again? But, the best part of the interview was when Tommy Smyth asked Beckham about being named one of People's Best Dressed. Smyth asked Beckham for advice on how to dress, and Beckham ignored the question and started talking about the English National Team.

What's Good for the Galaxy is Bad for Becks

Is the Galaxy front office staff praying that England doesn't make EURO 2008? OBJ assumes yes. Nothing could be worse for the Galaxy and MLS if England qualifies for the championship next summer in June. That could mean that Beckham would at least miss a month to a month and a half on the 2008 MLS season. Of course, MLS could rearrange the schedule next year too and make sure that the Galaxy play only a few games in the beginning of the season, ensuring that the Galaxy won't be Beckham-less for too many games, but something tells us that after the debacle that has been the 2007 season - MLS will think twice before they stack the Galaxy with too many games in the second half of the season.

English%20Nats.jpg

Beckham On Loan?

Rumor has it that David Beckham is ready to pack it up and head back to England. Wanting to get his 100th English National team cap, Beckham seems to think going on loan to an EPL team would make that dream a reality. As of right now, Beckham is three shy of a 100 caps. Beckham's injury will keep him sideline from at least the next two qualifiers, if not more...and that begs the question - if England qualifies without out him, will Steve McClaren call him up to the Euro 2008 squad (which by the way, would mean missing out on more Galaxy playing time).

The Galaxy is soon going to have to make a decision once their dismal season is over come Oct. 21st - Do they make Beckham stay or let him go?

Megged Mag Exclusive: Lalas to star in Cavemen sitcom

ABC’s much anticipated sitcom Cavemen will premier on October 2. The Geico Insurance commercial turned Seinfeld-like program has critics and cult fanatics debating a long term appeal.

A story leaked to Megged Magazine has LA Galaxy President, Alexi Lalas, guest starring in the premier. The neanderthal front-office-leader, of MLS bottom dwellers, has been linked to return to the broadcast booth for ABC’s ESPN next season. It seems both Victoria Beckham and Lalas have hidden acting agendas.

Calls from Megged to Cavemen, ABC, Lalas and the Galaxy were not confirmed as no calls were made to confirm any truth to this story.

SuperLiga finalists resume league play

OBJ took another look at both the SuperLiga finalists. Both squads needed to recover quickly as league play beckoned.

Apparently, Pachuca needed very little rest and crushed San Luis 4-1. Thus far, San Luis has been solid in the Mexican league, having gone 3-1-1. So Pachuca success continues.

However, the Galaxy’s next match wasn’t against a league contender and the Galaxy were beat 2-1, and now are four points behind RSL, who jumped ahead of them in the stands after the win against Kansas City on Wednesday.

Beckham rumored for European return

Galaxy franchise-midfielder, David Beckham, is rumored to return to play in the middle of October. However, it won’t be in Los Angeles. He’ll be playing for England as he and his country mates attempt to qualify for EURO 2008. The games will be against Estonia and Russia.
