Ronaldinho linked to NY Red Bulls?

next%20pele.JPG

In the past few days Ronaldinho has been linked with a transfer to Manchester City and AC Milan. The 28 year old is currently warming the bench as Barcelona's young guns chase Real Madrid and prepare for Manchester United.

I’m surprised Ronnie hasn’t been linked to MLS. I have to wonder and ask what your thoughts would be on him joining the New York Red Bulls. Could the number 10 playmaker bring back Pele type attention at Giants Stadium?

Barca Asks for Meeting with Ronaldinho's agent

ronaldinho%20spinning.jpg

FC Barcelona has reportedly asked Ronaldinho's agent for a meeting in an attempt to improve relations with the Brazil forward.

Barcelona hopes to convince Roberto De Assis, who is also Ronaldinho's brother, that it still believes in the 28-year-old player despite his below-par season, news agency Efe said Thursday.

The two-time FIFA world player of the year, who has missed the past three league matches and 13 over the season due to a series of physical problems, has been widely accused of a lack of commitment to the club.

Doubts about Ronaldinho's future grew this week when Italian paper Gazzetta dello Sport reported that De Assis recently met AC Milan vice president Adriano Galliani to discuss a possible move. Sports daily Marca has added that De Assis had also spoken to officials from Inter Milan.

While the buy-out clause attached to Ronaldinho's contract - which runs to 2010 - is €125 million (US$194 million), De Assis is reportedly threatening to invoke Article 17 of FIFA's transfer rules, which allow a player under 28 to end his contract after three years.

This would allow the Brazilian to leave Barcelona for a much lower fee - reportedly €16 million (US$25 million).

Ronaldinho joined Barcelona from Paris Saint-Germain in 2003 and helped the club win the Champions League in 2006 and the Spanish league title in 2005 and '06.

The Catalan team lies third in the Spanish league with 58 points, seven behind leader Real Madrid. Lacking Ronaldinho, Barcelona won 1-0 at Schalke in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals on Tuesday.

Barcelona Are In Crisis Mode

barca%20in%20crisis.jpg

For anyone in the Blaugrana camp still holding on to thoughts of a temporary blip, there is news. Coming for the very top management of the club, the message is clear: Barcelona are in crisis.

During an interview with Catalan television, Txiki Begiristain explained that he felt that the players were unable to cope when the going became tough in matches and that was why he believes the team are in crisis mode.

He admitted that the club had plans in place to make changes, but would only carry those out "at the end of the season" and that Frank Rijkaard would "not be going anywhere for now."

After Bojan Krkic and Samuel Eto'o had given Barca a commanding lead in the Ruiz de Lopera at the weekend, Betis came back and netted three times in the second period to record a memorable win. Rijkaard had admitted that he was ashamed, while Puyol had opined that the collapse was symptomatic of the club's season as a whole.

Txiki has also admitted that he was stunned the team have lost their key characteristic - "that of not giving opponents any chance of a recovery".

Let alone clean sheets, even if Barcelona conceded just the one goal per game since January (they conceded 0.89 per game in 2006-07), they would have had 13 more points in La Liga, and would have been six ahead of Real Madrid. In addition, they would have been in the Spanish Cup final.

Atletico Madrid have scored four against them, while Betis, Almeria, Valencia and Villarreal have all score two or more in what has been a shocking defensive collapse. Anything barring a full recovery by Tuesday could see Barcelona's season come crashing down.

Barcelona Want Rafa Not Jose to be the New Manager

rafa%20benitez%20to%20barca.jpg

Joan Laporta has laid the groundwork to make an official approach for Rafa Benítez as he does not want José Mourinho at Barcelona should Frank Rijkaard leave in the summer.

The Blaugrana supremo is believed to want to be prepared should the club's current coach opt not to continue next term after another difficult campaign in charge at Camp Nou.

While several names have already been throw in into the hat, El Mundo Deportivo believe that they have it on good authority that Benítez is Laporta' first choice.

Barça's board has been split over talk about a possible successor to Rijkaard with directors Ferran Soriano and Marc Ingla preferring Mourinho, while others see that as completely out of the question.

Laporta is one of those that does not want to see the Portuguese trainer return to the club where he once worked as a translator for Bobby Robson.

Moves have been made to discover if the current Liverpool boss would have any interest should the position be offered to him with the report suggesting that FIFA agent, Manuel García Quilón, being approached to find out.

Quilón told the club that Benítez is not considered to be unmovable by the Anfield club, but that he would not agree to any deal while Rijkaard was still in place.

Johan Cruyff's opposition to Mourinho is strong and his influence over the board should be enough to see that the former Chelsea coach has no chance of taking over at the club.

Barca Looking to the Copa Del Rey to Get on Track

frank%20rijkard.jpg

Valencia hosts FC Barcelona and Getafe travels to Racing Santander in this week's Copa del Rey semifinals.

Getafe, aiming to return to the final for the second straight year, is enjoying an 11-game unbeaten streak in all competitions, including a 3-1 win at home in the first leg.

The other semifinal match looks quite different.

Neither Valencia nor Barcelona have been impressive lately. Valencia, which got a 1-1 draw at Barcelona in the first leg, is coming into the match after a 2-1 loss to visiting Sevilla.

Valencia will likely find itself out of Europe for the second time in a decade if it fails to win the Copa del Rey for the 10th time.

Valencia is 11 points behind Atletico Madrid for the final Champions League qualifying place and nine behind Espanyol for a UEFA Cup place. It's only four points above the relegation zone.

The poor form could lead to an exodus of players.

Barcelona blew a chance to move within five points of league leader Real Madrid on Sunday when it allowed an 85th-minute equalizer in a 2-2 draw at Almeria. The team now trails by seven points.

Barca Title Dreams Dashed After Loss

barca%20to%20visit%20red%20bulls.jpg

Barcelona's title hopes are hanging by a thread with Frank Rijkaard's team eight points behind Real Madrid after a late goal from Jon-Dahl Tomasson helped Villarreal to a 2-1 win at Camp Nou on Sunday.

With eleven games left Barca need a minor miracle to overhaul Real, 2-1 conquerors of Espanyol on Saturday, and prevent their arch -rivals from retaining the Spanish championship.

Xavi Hernandez looked to have snatched a point for Barca after he cancelled out Marcos Senna's first half penalty but Danish substitute Tomasson struck the winner nine minutes from time.

It was a famous win for Villarreal who have completed a league double over the Catalans and are now only four points behind in third.

Two weeks ago Barcelona were just two points behind Real but successive defeats to Atletico Madrid and Villarreal could have ended their title hopes. Rijkaard has guided Barca into the quarter-finals of the Champions League and the semi-finals of the Kings Cup but losing the league title to Real again may prove the final straw for the Barcelona board.

Soccer Preview for the Weekend

Saturday:

Arsene%20Wenger%202.jpg

Arsenal v. Aston Villa: Arsenal welcomes Villa to the Emirates on Saturday after a difficult week following the horrible incident that occurred in Birmingham. Arsenal is stretched with many injuries in their team, and Aston Villa will be looking to capitalize on this. Martin O’Neill’s squad has been playing very well this season and of late has been playing some captivating football. Olof Mellberg has gotten back to fitness, and Villa will need his experience against Adebayor. Watch for Theo Walcott, this is his time to shine, and after he scored twice against Birmingham, he is full of confidence.

BundesLiga%20Logo.jpg

Schalke v. Bayern Munich: Schalke coach Mirko Slomka, is on thin ice with his chairman after back to back defeats in the last two weeks. Schalke has fallen into fifth position in the Bundesliga, nine points behind their opponent on Saturday, Bayern Munich. Bayern Munich barely scraped out an extra time win during the midweek in a DFB-Pokal match. Luca Toni was sent off in the match, which means Bayern will be without his services as well as Bastian Schweinsteiger, Lucio, Miroslav Klose, and Martin Demichelis. Frank Ribery will receive his first start in a month, but Bayern will be lacking in attacking options. This is a great opportunity for Schalke to get a win.

ronaldinho.jpg

Barcelona v. Atletico Madrid: Barcelona has been flying of late, and Lionel Messi has been a man possessed with the ball at his feet. Although Barca was lucky during the midweek to earn a draw in the Copa Del Rey, they will be visiting a lack luster side in Atletico Madrid. Atletico has been knocked out of both the UEFA Cup and the Copa Del Rey in recent weeks, and Barca will be looking to close the gap on Real Madrid at the top of the table. Ronaldinho will return to the side, after being rested in the midweek and the formidable attack of Barcelona will be on display.

Sunday:

Serie%20A%20Logo.jpg

Juventus v. Fiorentina: The game of the weekend in the Italian Serie A has Juventus hosting Fiorentina in the Stadio Olimpico in Turin. Fiorentina, sitting in fourth position, has been losing points in the last two matches with AC Milan nipping at their heels. Fiorentina has lost their leading goal scorer in Adrian Mutu, so it will be up to Christian Vieri to score some important goals. Juventus is very close to both Fiorentina and Milan on points, and they know that this a playoff for the Champions League. Nedved and center-back Chiellini will be missing for the Turin outfit, and if Fiorentina can beat Juve and Milan beat Lazio, three points will separate the three teams.

Preview and Predictions too Another Great Weekend of Football

EPLlogo.jpg

Manchester City 1-3 Manchester United: This promises to be the best match of the weekend. Firstly, it’s the Manchester Derby, always a great fixture, and normally with lot's of goals. Secondly, Manchester United will be celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the “Munich Air Disaster”. Both sides will be dressed in kits that don’t have any sponsors, and will all be wearing black boots to commemorate the memory of the people who lost their lives. Thirdly, the fans hate each other, and it will be interesting to see if the minute silence will be observed in good nature. Manchester United, in trying to ease tension, has apparently taken down a banner that reminds City fans that they haven’t won any silverware in thirty-two years. This match can be seen on Setanta, on Sunday at 8:30 AM ET.

Liverpool 1-2 Chelsea: This fixture always promises to be nuts. Liverpool will be without Fernando Torres, which is a shame to the match, and the reason I picked Chelsea to win. Michael Ballack has been unstoppable of late, and so has the form of Chelsea. Stamford Bridge has been a fortress for Chelsea as well, and it will be rocking as they welcome their "new rivals", since they have seen Liverpool so frequently, to London. This fixture can be seen on FSC on Sunday, at 11 AM ET.

La%20Liga%20Logo.jpg

Barcelona 2-2 Sevilla: Barca goes into Sevilla without seven first team members. They have closed the gap to six points between Real Madrid and themselves, although Sevilla are a good side. Sevilla are looking to maintain their Champions League spot, and will look to take Barca to task without some of their key squad members. This match is on Gol TV, on Saturday, at 4 PM ET.

BundesLiga%20Logo.jpg

Werder Bremen 1-1 Bayern Munich: Now here is a tasty fixture. Bayern will be without the services of Ribery, but that doesn’t diminish the fact that this is number one against number two in the table. This promises to be a heated affair and is definitely worth a few hours. Quality players on both sides, and in the Allianz Arena, which promises to have a great atmosphere. You can watch this match on Gol TV on Sunday at 11 AM ET.

AFCON%20Logo.jpg

Egypt 3-0 Cameroon: The African Cup of Nations final has the winner of the last tournament Egypt against Cameroon. Egypt is coming off a huge win against the Ivory Coast, in a match that they dominated. Cameroon barely scraped by the host’s Ghana, and it will be a difficult match for them. It will be a difficult game to watch if you haven’t already subscribed to watch the entire tournament, but try to find someone who can tape it, because this should be quite a spectacle.

Exciting Weekend of Matches

Wow, an exciting weekend of great matches and great theatre that lived up to the hype.

EPLlogo.jpg

Tottenham had a chance to take the lead in the north London derby against their bitter rivals Arsenal. Robbie Keane, one of the most reliable spot kick takers in the Premiership, was blocked by Almunia in the Arsenal net, allowing substitute Nicklas Bendtner to score on his first touch. Yids all over the world again are on the wrong side of the result, against their north London neighbors. At Old Trafford, Everton deserved a point, and were a mere five minutes away from full time when Ryan Giggs was brought down in the box, after a wayward attempt at a tackle by Steven Pienaar. Ronaldo then put his second in the back of the net, to take all three points from a very entertaining match. In a side note, Arteta did not play for Everton in the midfield, which was very apparent in the match.

julio%20baptista.jpg
Baptista Celebrates His Goal

In La Liga, El Clasico took place at the Nou Camp, with many surprised spectators surprised to see Ronaldihno in the starting eleven. The match, although not as enthralling as the last installment which ended in a three all draw, was captivated by brilliant skill and ball movement. The best movement of the game was the movement which provided the only goal of the match. Baptista and Van Nistelrooy provided a sweeping one two move that opened up the Barca defense, and ended with a blast from Baptista. The second half of the match displayed some of the best football of the year, with Raul and Deco playing some eye-catching stuff at the end of the match.

Maicon.jpg
Inter Milan Glory

At the San Siro on Sunday, Inter Milan beat their city rivals AC Milan, with Dida giving Inter an early Christmas present. Andrea Pirlo scored a magnificent free kick to open the scoring in a goal that was against the run of play. Shortly after Pirlo’s brilliant effort, Cambiasso played a ball into Cruz who beat several Milan defenders, and scored a great goal, beating Dida at his near post. Kaka was always a threat, although drifting in and out of the game, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic, terrorized the back line of Milan. The quality of the interlinking play and possession was evident throughout the match, but Cambaisso’s effort on goal, although struck hard, should have been saved by the hapless Dida. Other than the goalkeeper for Milan, the football on the pitch was magnificent and a display of class.

While the football on the pitch was quality, again, my picks were terrible, and although I was closer this week, I still have work to do.

Messi vs. Raul, Foosball

foosball%20barca%20v%20real.bmp

Great article previewing the Barca-Real match.

The highly anticipated Barcelona-Real Madrid encounter started with a foosball game between Messi and Raúl. Adidas brought them togeteher for a duel that unfortunately won't take place on the pitch because of the Argentine's injury..

Exciting Weekend of Football

This weekend in football has many appealing and exciting matches in each of the three top leagues.

EPLlogo.jpg
Three Great Games in the EPL

In the English Premier League, Tottenham visit the Emirates to play against their North London rivals, Arsenal. Tottenham have played very well of late, but have struggled for the last ten years against their bitter rivals. Arsenal beat Spurs two nil, against the Yid’s and rule North London once again. Manchester United welcome Everton to Old Trafford, with both teams on a great run of form, but something has to give. Look for the matchup in the midfield between Cahill and Arteta of Everton against Hargreaves and Anderson from United, whoever wins this battle, could nick the winner. All this being said, the midfield will be bogged down and the match ends in one all draw. The under the radar match this weekend is Blackburn hosting Chelsea. Blackburn have had a terrible run of form, but at Ewood Park, I fancy a hard fought match in the midfield, with a great finish. Chelsea leave it late, but beat Blackburn two too one on the road.

ronaldihno.jpg
A Key in this Match

In La Liga, Barcelona host Real Madrid at the Nou Camp, in another installment of “El Classico”. Lionel Messi will be missing from the match for Barcelona, and Ronaldihno has been rumored to been having disputes with manager Frank Riijkaard. Real Madrid is fully fit, and ready to get it done against Barca. Real Madrid beats their Catalan counterparts two too one.

kaka.jpg
Kaka, A Derby Veteran
In Serie A this weekend, Inter Milan again battle against their rivals AC Milan on Sunday morning. Inter have been playing the best football in Europe, whilst their counterparts have been underachieving, and have a worse home record than poor Derby in the Premiership. AC Milan is so poor at home in fact they do not possess a win at the San Siro, in the Serie A. Although both teams play at the San Siro, and Inter is the home team in this match, AC Milan will still lose this two nil, with Crespo coming off the bench to score against his old team.

Barcelona vs. Real Madrid - 79th Derby

This Holiday season GolTV fans will have more than one reason to celebrate. The week of the 23rd of December, GolTV will be the only place in the U.S where fans can tune-in to observe two of the most aggressive rivals battle it out.

The 79th edition of the much awaited Clasico will be played at the Camp Nou Stadium in Barcelona, Spain and will feature some of the most amazing and skillful players on the planet such as: Ronaldhino, Van Nisterooy, Messi, Raul, Henry, Casillas, Rafael Marquez, Cannavaro and many others.

The last edition of El Clasico in March 2007 was a draw between these two titans. Will History repeat itself??? Or as some speculate, will The Catalan league-leaders settle for nothing less than victory by front lining Messi, Eto'o and Ronaldihno as was done in the Champions League….

History on the on the other hand would wager on the side of the Real Madrid with 66 wins vs. the 58 of Barca.

Tune in to see what happens. Do not miss the 79th Derby, exclusively on GolTV.

It is without a doubt the most eagerly anticipated soccer event of the season.

From Spain: Barcelona vs. real Madrid – December 23rd at 1 p.m. (ET)

Henry Has First Hat Trick of La Liga Career

Thierry Henry is no stranger to finding the back of the net. He scored his first, second and third goal of his La Liga campaign today against Levante, winning the match 4-1.

Argentina's Lionel Messi added the final goal for Barcelona.

Barca, who is undefeated thie season, moved to the top of the table. They are one point ahead of rivals Real Madrid, who play their league game tomorrow.

Americans Abroad Update

With another weekend of European matches in the history books, here is what the Americans abroad did:

As noted in Michael Bradley Scores Again, Bradley was the only National Team player to score this weekend, but another American born player found the back of the net twice. Villarreal's Giuseppe Rossi helped his team to victory against Murcia.

Over at Fulham, both Clint Dempsey and Carlos Bocanegra played the 90 minutes in the 3-3 draw against Manchester City. Bocanegra even drew a yellow card for his efforts. On the bench was Kasey Keller.

Benny Feilhaber came in during the second half, while Eddie Lewis played the full 90 minutes in Derby's 5-0 loss to Arsenal.

Jonathan Spector played the final 10 minutes for West Ham United.

Marcus Hahnemann was in goal for Reading and drew a yellow card in Reading's 2-1. Bobby Convey played 27 minutes for the team.

Brad Friedel was in goal for Blackburn's 1-0 loss to Portsmouth. Jay DeMerit played the first half in Watford's 1-1 tie. While Frank Simek played the full 90 for Sheffield Wednesday.

U.S. National Team midfielder DaMarcus Beasley was on the bench for the Rangers this week.

Steve Cherundolo started and played 90 for Hannover 96.

Americans Abroad: Update

The Americans in Europe definitely made their mark this week. U.S. National Team and Fulham midfielder Clint Dempsey scored the only Fulham goal in the 1-1 tie with Wigan. Michael Bradley got on the scoreboard for Heerenveen, as he's team destroyed Excelsior 5-2. DaMarcus Beasley couldn't be showed up by his National Team teammates also scoring in the Ranger's 4-2 loss to Hearts.

Other American players around Europe:

Carlos Bocanegra reached his 100th match for Fulham during the tie against Wigan. Kasey Keller was on the bench for that game.

Reading lost to Sunderland 2-1, but Marcus Hahnemann made eight saves, and Bobby Convey came off the bench in the 76-minute of play.

Brad Friedel helped Blackburn walk away with a point, as he made 13 saves against Chelsea.

Steve Cherundolo (Hannover), Heath Pearce (Hansa Rostock) and Frank Simek (Preston North End) all started and played for their respective teams.
